5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating work
This book took me into the grassroots level work of the newest Nobel Peace Prize winner.I was glad to get a glimpse into what the world is just recognizing as the new frontier - the hope that comes from action at the local level which makes real course changes in our world as a whole.I enjoyed the very practical outline of this movement's accomplishments and connections to the growing consciousness for earth's slow, steady salvation.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREEN BELT MOVEMENT
I found this book to be an enlightening and educating account of the background and work of the current Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Wangari Maathai.THE GREEN BELT MOVEMENT is currently the only volume that provides as much insight on this topic.
4-0 out of 5 stars Depressed about the environment?Read this book!!
The Green Belt Movement by Wangari Maathai is a wonderful, informative and user-friendly book that gives a good sense of the movement's history and the person behind it. Just as Maathai in her work likes to keep her hands in the dirt planting trees, in her book she cuts directly to the meat and bones of what the Green Belt Movement is about and how it functions practically on the ground.

2-0 out of 5 stars not as good as i expected
this highly recommended book started out as a compelling read, but became something i had to force myself to finish. it seems to be a series of lectures strung together, which may have been interesting as lectures, but is not cohesive enough to be a book. the good information is lost amidst the rambling style.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Landscape Architects
Anyone studying environmental planning or LA should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Significant Book for Architects - Though a Little Slow
While it's not the kind of book you want to lounge around the fireplace reading, it is a book that is frequently referred to by architects. It is significant in designing and ecologially friendly building in today's built-up environment.Summary:Not a great book, but a useful resource for architects. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment for the price, but probably the best available in print.
I used this textbook for an introductory-level class in geomorphology for undergrads and graduate students. The course assumed no background in geomorphology, but required a beginning course in geology or physical geography. While this text was adequate for the class' needs (and is superior to or on par with others currently in print), I have a number of frustrations with the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Textbook
I used this textbook for a geography class called "Landforms".It was a great guide and a fairly easy read.My only problem with it is it is all in black and white except for a couple of color photo inserts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures... but what is this fish?
I bought this book to help me identify fish. Have it worked so far? No.
2-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Picture book; useless otherwise
This book has changed a lot since the first edition. Mostly, it has removed information and added pictures. LOTS of pictures. It is more of a coffee-table book than any kind of aquarium guide. But even the pictures are of uneven quality. I was shocked that the only picture included for a couple of fairly common fish were of dead, poorly-preserved specimens. Yikes!
3-0 out of 5 stars An Atlas and Little Else
"ATLAS" is defined: A volume of tables, charts, or plates that systematically illustrates a particular subject: an anatomical atlas. That's what this book is and nothing else. It has both a scientific name index and a somewhat handy Popular Names index and usually several plates (pictures) of each species. This book can be used for two purposes. If you have the name of the fish, you can find pictures of the species from the indexes. One can also puruse the many pages of pictures and find something that interests them and then go to another book for detailed information. That's about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Important Book
Everyone who cares about the earth and the fate of humanity should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on global warming and its consequences
As I was researching global warming for my novel, The Remembering, A Novel of Karma and Global Peril, I read five books on the subject.By far, Harmann's was the most thoughtful and helpful, especially his discussion of how "ancient sunlight" -- oil and other fossil fuels -- engendered the industrial revolution and an unsustainable expansion of human population since the 1880's.Especially useful was his projection of how the human race will fare when oil supplies dwindle during this century along with mass population displacements. There are certain ignore-ant politicians who would benefit from this information and its visionary suggestions on how we might correct our shortsighted errors before it's too late.
1-0 out of 5 stars Please read this review before you blow your money
Listen.. if you have NEVER had a high school science class and need refresher CHAPTERS about how photosynthesis works, if you have a 30 second memory and can forget that you read two sentences in two consecutive paragraphs which were identical, if you have no idea about what's going on in the world and you are making an honest attempt to understand.. this is the book for you.If you passed basic biology in high school, try a big boy book, like Guns, Germs and Steal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Salt of the earth
I wish I had been taught world history through a device such as this.Instead of learning the names of kings and battles and related dates, this kind of perspective really helps the reader understand the 'why' of so much behind what ultimately happened in western civilization. Once you can grasp that conceptual overview, all else follows with profound logic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for history and trivia junkies
While the book does not follow a "narrative" format, and occasionally changes places and times without warning, I none the less give it an unreserved recomendation!More wars, trades, and other history shaping events have happened because of salt than almost any other substance, and salt has been crtical in trade, and warfare, throughout history.I learned more about places and events I *thought* I was familiar with than I would have thought possible.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendous mistake
One of the most fascinating aspects of salt is that it is hygroscopic. That is due to its chemical nature, it is slightly cooler than "room temperature".Consequently, water will form on the surface of salt from the atmosphere if it is even moderately humid (hence the reason why most of us put rice in our salt shakers - to absorb the water salt collects). You do not have to be a brain surgeon to understand the process.Imagine my surprise when I found in the very first chapter, Kurlansky waxing on whimsically about how he tried to "cook" all of the water out of his pet salt crystal so that water would not come out of it and dissolve the surface.I figure that he knows that salt is made up of NaCl (although I now have my doubts) and there is not much room for water in its crystal structure (almost zero water in it). Here is a guy that has written an entire book on the subject salt.I presumed when I purchased the book that he would be somewhat of an authority on the subject. To say the least, I have to question his abilities to write a book on salt based on the fact that he does not have the foggiest idea about one of the most interesting properties of his subject.Wow.This is a case of a good writer attempting to write on a subject he forgot to read about.By the way, a casual search of salt properties on the internet would have given him the correct information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Dont own previous books by Paul Stamets, but have read through a bunch. THis book is a really fine addition to the library. Lots of information, lots of color photos, and an enjoyable read. Get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is an incredibly interesting + informative book
This is a well written, interesting book. And mycelium running has more relevance than I ever imagined (if I thought about it at all). In general, I'd ditch science books for literature in 2 seconds. But I just can't put this book down. It's definitely worth your $$$.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive mushroom/fungi book out there
Paul Stamets truly knows the material and has some great insights into the world of growing mushrooms. He succinctly describes how the science of the relatively unknown 5th kingdom (fungi) can be applied to mycoremediation to help unpollute the planet.Even though this sounds like a heavy subject, the material is understandable for people with little scientific or fungal knowledge and helps anybody understand hwo they too can get closer to mushrooms. ... This book provides a good summary of methods and techniques that are available for wildlife studies. It is a good starting point for graduate students and researchers who would like to get a broad overview, but for more details on particular types of analysis, other resources are needed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Heroes, Villians & still a dying Jewel
My job touches not so peripherally on Everglades National Park, one of the crown jewels of the U.S. national park system, so I was eager to read this highly recommended summary of the history of the Everglades by Washington Post report Mike Grunwald.Calling this book a summary doesn't do it justice - it's comprehensive without being overly long, it's an excellent read without being too journalistic, its coverage of the issue is broad without being too shallow, and it inflames while also moderating the reasons why, in 2006, the Everglades is still dying, because of our insatiable greed and need for more, more, more - water, land, money, power.I picked up this book a couple months back, connecting with the topic on a professional level, but then as I approached the end of the book, sad news from Florida brought me unexpectedly in personal contact with one of the millions of human stories that pervade the Everglades, Florida, and the politics of paradise, the subtitle of this book - the passing of my aunt, whose husband and sons were some of those folks who greatly enjoyed being swamp rats, hunting, fishing and airboating through the river of grass.Speaking with an uncle who remembers the wilderness that used to be the Everglades 40-50 years ago, we talked about the daily rains that used to come every afternoon, like clockwork, around 4-5pm each day in southern Florida. This book talks about silting of estuaries, muddy waters and phosphorous deposits in the great Lake Okeechobee, depleted water tables, red tides killing endangered or threatened charismatic species like the manatee and dolphins and how the Army Corps of Engineers has falled to figure out 'it's the environment, stupid.'As we walked under a beautiful blue sky, in a Palm Beach county cemetary that hasn't seen water in too long a time, my uncle remarked that the daily rains that I had reminisced about have been AWOL for the past four years.Something is still very wrong in The Swamp, and while this book spells out what it is, we should reflect on the avarice in our cold hearts that continues to plunder the only home we have, and be moved to renewed action to restore, as reasonably as possible given our wide footprint on the land, this dying jewel. For an excellent understanding of what's happened, and happening, to the Everglades, READ THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars `The Swamp': A Fast-Paced Run Through the Everglades and Florida Real Estate Development; History, Ecology Never Was So Fun to R

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinting look at Florida History
I checked this out from the library for a work project, but I was soon totally engrossed. I learned the true meaning of the pharase "Florida Swampland." Grunwald has extensively researched this book and all the detail he provides gives a better understanding of how our nation has treated the Everglades. Come Hell or High Water is a well-documented account of the events surrounding the failure, or more accurately the refusal, of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), state and local politicians from the State of Louisiana (Governor Kathleen Blanco, Mayor Ray Nagin) and the President of the United States, to take immediate proactive measures to rescue the predominately black residents living in the Ninth ward of New Orleans.
