5-0 out of 5 stars Great Environmental Chem Text
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized.Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good presentation of a broad topic.
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying tounderstand an environmental problem, especially if the readers backgroundin chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to understand
Environmetal chemistry is a very helpful book for studensts inenvironmental chemistry studies. But as a pure chemistry student i findsome parts of the book too easy, even boring at times, specially thechapters on organic environmental chemistry. On the other hand the chapterson physical environmental chemistry are very good and contain challengingproblems. ... One of the best introduction to metrology I have read.Great for any anyone that is interested in the weather.Gives more information then average books that are found at local book stores. Also the on line tests help you know what you have learned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very dissatisfied with this seller
I purchased a textbook on May 11 and it supposedly shipped on May 15, 2006.It is now June 2 and I have yet to receive this order.I do not believe that it takes 21 days for a book to arrive. What is even more infuriating is that the seller has ignored all my e-mails regarding my order.I definitely have every intention of letting Amazon know just how poorly this seller treats customers and I expect that Amazon will have to refund my money because these people won't even acknowledge a customer once they have your money.I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS SELLER AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book covering everything
This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also.It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out.I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful.I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text For Environmental Design Management ! Flawless!
I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.

GREAT!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 94 S: Excellent Resource, Environmental Health professionals
I have just reviewed the ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND SANITATION 1994SUPPLEMENT, by Joseph A. Salvato and Joe E. Beck. It's a great resourcefor professionals seeking a broader vision of environmental health practiceareas and where we are heading.Prof. Beck obviously put a lot of workinto conceptualizing this volume and working with the distinguishedcontributors. It shows. In particular, I found the first chapter,Stakeholder Focused Interactive Planning (SFIP)by Joe Beck and Steven Isonto be a brilliant piece on the desirability of (indeed, the imperative forour profession to) include the public in problem-solving and planning.Ihave used this process and mediated disputes ranging from sitingcontroversies (haz. waste facility siting in Massachusetts) to determiningfuture land use options at Hanford in the nuclear weapons complex.Icommend both Beck and Ison for their clear portrayal of the paradigm aswell as the steps one undertakes in conducting such planning.Federalgovernment engineers and planners have been learning the hard way aboutwhat happens when decisions are made without public input and withoutregard to the values, interests, and expectations of so-calledstakeholders.At Hanford, more than $20 billion in appropriations hasyielded preciously little in terms of actual cleanup:one may wonder ifCongress will continue to appropriate the substantial $6 billion a year forthe Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Program without consensus ofthe public on #1) the benefits or #2) the ameliorated risks from presentexpenditures.Current stakeholders come from a wide range of publicinterest groups and they do not get along particularly well. They do nothave current programs or projects that reflect the use of the SFIP andresearchers should be asking themselves, "Why not?" (Resourcesfor the Future [RFF] has an on-going research project that tackles publicparticipation in environmental decision making).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Plan B
Fred Pearce provides a current and thorough accounting of the travestries of water mismanagement throughout the globe.Plan A groups the grandiose and expensive plans of water engineers to impound and transfer water that have already failed or soon will fail [e.g. "water flows uphill to money"]
5-0 out of 5 stars Afoundation to our future
A scientific travelogue, engaging both in the author's personal approach and the wealth of information it contains. Highly readable; the message is both clear and alarming:we have soiled our home, have lost sight of our stewardship, and immediate action is needed.Continuing neglect, indifference, and procrastination will be irreversible. Not a shrill or alarmist messenger, the author provides practical interventions both for the individual and on a larger, political scale. The concern is that, embedded in the present, broader cacophany of blame and distraction, the book will be overlooked.Read this book. You owe it to yourself and the future to not sit on the sidelines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sponge of Damocles
For those concerned about the frightening state of the world's fresh water supplies, this book is a treasure of information and viewpoints on why humanity should start getting extremely worried about the issue. Fred Pearce has traveled the world to report on water supply horror stories (and a few success stories), with the theme of river health and long-term human usage. This book turns out to have a similar effect for the reader as others on the subject, which dutifully report on who in the world doesn't have enough water to drink and the potential human consequences. (Though this one probably has the most specific examples.) Pearce does give his book a bit of an edge by finding some unique insights into the social and economic problems that are leading us all down a sinkhole of disappearing water.

2-0 out of 5 stars gloom and doom
Gloom and doom with a left wing slant.Peak oil is real but this guy is extrapolating many trends to arrive at his version of a gloomy future. The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Future of Oil
I came by this book after reading an excellent review of it by the Editor-in-Chief of the Podium Journal, Jonathan F Porter. The author, Richard Heinberg, offers a perspective on our dependency of oil which is not often considered. The historical interpretation of oil's role in our culture encourages one to consider taking the bus instead driving to the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also look atEnergy at the Crossroads by Vaclav Smil
This book has been well reviewed by others and I do not wish to reiterate their comments.I have no expertise in the field but I find little to disagree with - we are in trouble, our lifestyle is going to change and the sooner we start dealing with it the more of our culture we can preserve.I am writing to suggest another source of information which comes to the same conclusions but is a little less alarmist and which is not mentioned in Heinberg's book nor in the Amazon lists of what others who bought this book bought. This is Energy at the Crossroads by by Vaclav Smil.It was reviewed in Nature, one of the two most respected of our scientific journals, by Michael Grubb who concludes it is "The most sober, thorough, and thoughtful integrated text on energy available, and it embodies core facts and some fundamental truths that any analyst of energy issues should ponder." Smil is an academic who has studying energy issues for 40 years. He is less inclined to forecast than Heinberg having seen so many erroneous predictions however he is clear about the coming end of oil.He goes into more depth on energy issues, global warming, and especially the alternatives to fossil fuel (no great news). He does not have the activist impulses of Heinberg - which may of course be good or too bad depending on what it takes to change course.Smil's book is both longer and more difficult to read because of the amount of science presented and I found it well worth the effort. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Comprehensive Intro and Education.
I have been looking for a book that would educate me on exactly what green building is, whether it is actually practical and whatit would take to achieve it.This book answered all those questions.I think it has filled a void in the information market. So many people are not satisfied with current building practices especially in the US yet finding one comprehensive source for reliable answers is extremely difficult. There is lots of experience bound up in the very well-written, easy flowing text. The mass of photos is extremely instructive and attractive. This book is not clouds-in-the-sky, blindly pro-environment babble.Neither is it full of the marketing lies that exploit the "green" movement. It is useful for normal people who are interesting in trying to build earth-friendly but practical, efficient and affordable homes. The writers are very honest in their educated opinions and recommendations. And they actually built a small green building in order to write this book.So you get the useful, hands-on advice that they learned themselves the hard way even with their past, extensive building experience in the US.I appreciate their effort and book very much, and can't recommend it highly enough as one every non-expert should read if they have a possible interest in green building in the future or even in just building a marginally more efficient home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nicely presented intoduction to several green techniques
A very nicely presented 'survey' of several green building techniques with a practical and mainstream perspective.Less inspiring and holistic (in terms of presenting an overall philosophy of building AND living) than the likes of The Hand-Sculpted House (Evans, Smiley and Smith), etc. but the beautiful photography and clear writing is a powerful tool to use in convincing the skeptical that green building is a legitimate and aesthetically pleasing option in construction.Really more of a 'complete introduction' than a 'complete how-to guide' in my estimation- if you are really going to build you'll need to suppliment your knowledge with additional in depth books on the particular system(s) you choose to use, but this book will expose you to some of the options and provide you with an informational foundation to 'build' on (pun intended).

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential natural/alternative building manual!
At last - a comprehensive and attractive manual that clearly shows us how to employ 4 different natural building methods; cob, straw bale, cordwood and modified stick frame.

4-0 out of 5 stars you can't find an alternative.
when i was a student, i used to think, like many other reviewers, that the book is extremely dry. but now as a researcher in atmospheric-oceanic dynamics, i realise that the book is useful in explaining the most essential and elementary theories behind the dynamics one can encounter in meteorology or climate dynamics.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Text
This book, often simply referred to as "Holton", has been roundly cursed by undergraduates since it was first published. I know, because I was one of them. However, as the years went by, and as the number of classes requiring Holton as a text went by, I realized two things.First, that this book was not meant to hold your hand through all the derivations. It requires a competent instructor who can use Holton as a detailed companion to rigorous coursework. This book is NOT for the average person who wishes to study alone. The second thing is that this book was written to fill a gap. There were no similar atmospheric dynamics texts. As a consequence, it must cover a large amount of material in a rather small, college textbook-sized space. It does this well.Yes, the author's writing style is dry to the extreme, and yes, physical explanations are often lacking. However, if you have access to a competent professor, neither of these are problems. One final thought... as we call the book simply "Holton" remember that Frankenstein's monster is often called simply "Frankenstein", but we will leave comparisons to the reader - and to the author!

5-0 out of 5 stars Paramount
Useful introduction to dynamic meteorology.Covers many fundamental concepts and concisely. It is not a good fluid dynamics book.It is developed for the atmospheric scientist. It contains an exceptional chapter on waves. Also, there are some elementary concepts related to stratospheric dynamics and general circulation that are very well-written. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is pretty good!
I bought this study guide to help me in my geology class. It isn't the same edition as my textbook but it is still the same. The chapters are the same and it has really helped me remember the material. The pages have fill in the blank and multiple choice and practice quizzes. All the answers are at the end of the book. I recomend this for anyone who is taking geology and is using the "Earth" book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introductory textbook in physical geology
Despite the proliferation of introductory physical geology textbooks in recent years, none have surpassed the quality of Tarbuck and Lutgens' "Earth".The text is accurate, up-to-date, well-organized, andexceptionally lucid. The writing flows nicely and presents complex topicsand ideas in a way that is easy for non-scientists to understand, while atthe same time resisting the trend toward "dumbing-down" that hasrecently affected many introductory textbooks in Earth sciences. The bookis also illustrated wonderfully with diagrams that are effectivelydesigned, beautifully executed, and perfectly matched to the accompanyingtext. The photographs are likewise outstanding in subject and quality, with great efforts obviously having been made to find excellent picturesthat complement the text and clearly illustrate the features and processesbeing described. The overall quality of the photographs is far better thanin most other textbooks of this kind.Substantial improvements have beenmade for the sixth edition, including the addition of helpful illustrationsto the glossary and the addition of many new photographs throughout thebook (for example, compare the 5th and 6th edition pictures of drumlins, moraines, igneous rock textures, tsunamis, sinkholes, etc.).Afterexamining many textbooks, I have decided to use this one in theundergraduate course I will teach next year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Earth - an average introductory textbook
This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in manydeserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost)wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importanceof past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet, warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to thegeohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics,as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation platetectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes areentirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than aglaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions ofyears before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad.The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts(as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the MojaveDesert). Etc., etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, economical, and practical guide
What a value! For under $10, not only do you receive a well written and highly practical guide to things that anyone can do to help slow global warming, you get a hillarious foreword by Larry David (Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm Fame) and an excellent resource listing of websites, organizations, associations, and companies that are working to stem the tide of climate change. This book is slim enough to fit in a back pocket, backpack or purse - which makes it easy to read on the commute. This is an ideal companion / follow-up-read to "An Inconvenient Truth" as it offers some great advice on what to do. If you're concerned about climate change, have seen Al Gore's documentary, read An Inconvenient Truth, or have friends and family that share your concern - or better yet don't - buy this book and a copy for them!

5-0 out of 5 stars The phenomenology of space and place
In "Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience," Tuan provides a descriptive account of the concepts "space" and "place," drawing on the work of phenomenologists, anthropologists, psychologists, geographers, and others. He grounds his analysis in a structuralist framework, using anthropological research to illustrate how our experiences of space and place can "transcend cultural particularities" (Tuan 1977, p. 5).Tuan provides an original and intriguing discussion of a wide range of topics, such as the relationship between space and place, on the one hand, and myths, architecture, time, religion, and cognition, on the other.I would highly recommend this work to anyone interested in human geography, cultural geography, urban geography, urban studies, and to anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of the importance of space and place for our lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Importance of Meaning in Architecture
This book was one of several books I studied to better understand the roleof place in architecture and interior design. It helped me understand theimportance of working with clients to understand the meanings they inferfrom the environment around them. In the book, Tuan highlights theimportance of meaning and an insider's view.He describes place ashumanized space. The contrast of open space with enclosed, comfortingareas enhances both.As a person's emotional bond to a space increases, sodo familiarity, comfort, and the sense of insideness.Without personalcontrol over space, this emotional bond is slow to develop. To createplace, Tuan suggests that memorable architecture should strenghen ourmemories, enhance the self, and provide layers of meaning to a space. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense book not only for CMMI
I bought this book because my Company is thinking about getting into CMMI.I realized that this book is a common sense approach to process improvement.I was skeptic about CMMI and the way that other companies implement it.This book makes you keep your feet on the ground. It is an imparcial approach to a difficult task. You may save yourself a lot of money just by following the guidelines recommended by the author. In my case, I used some of the recommendations in my own process, because common sense is applicable everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gutsy and Honest approach to Process Improvement!
Finally, a refreshingly honest approach to CMMI and process improvement.Michael has an uncanny ability to see into the heart of organizational psychology and points out the real reasons for attempting any improvement or organizational change. He strips away the hype surrounding CMMI and focuses on what's really important...obtaining results and improving the bottom line. It might be considered contrarian or even heretical by those making a living by selling CMMI, but I call it practical, gutsy and honest.A must read by any organization considering change regardless of the model chosen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected gem - read before leaping!
If you're expecting a book that shows how to implement the CMMI, or even one that gushes about its benefits you're in for a surprise.Yes, this book does show how to achieve process improvement by using the CMMI as a model, but it differs greatly from the recipe approaches of similar books that will have you marching over a cliff instead of improving your organization. The author does this by uncovering fallacies and the blind paths the CMMI (or any process improvement initiative) represents.Read more
