4-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of knowledge
Loaded with good no-nonsense information on preparing a productive garden in an efficient and economical manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars gardening when it counts
I own Steve's previous book and have gardened for years using his method. This book explains in great detail how plants grow and survive down to the line drawings of root structure for most vegetables. That helped me to understand just how important it is to space my plants correctly. His description of how to manage the soil before planting is great! I can't wait to get out in the garden and amaze my neighbors!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, basic, orgainic vegtable gardening book
This is an excellent vegetable gardening book. Although Mr. Solomon has moved to Tasmania and now expands his scope to much of the English speaking world; if you have read his "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades", you will find much that is familiar here.If not, you will find excellent information on seeds, where to buy them, how to prepare the garden bed and plant them, how to choose and maintain quality tools, composting and fertilizing, pest and disease problems, irrigation, and some specific plant growing advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource on Biodiesel and other alt. fuels
Greg does a great job of explaining what biodiesel is, how/where it came about, and why it is a good additive to our current petrodiesel. He also writes about what other countries are doing with and how they are (currently) ahead of the US in utilizing it.He also discusses other forms of alternative/renewable sources of energy.I would recommend this book as good reading, but I would probably recommend 'Biodiesel America' first....as it has a bit more current info than Biodiesel: Growing A New Energy Economy. But good reading nontheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Biodiesel
Greg's book is a fine introduction to the concept of diesel biofuels and deserves its fivestar rating. He obviously believes that the advantages of cleaner emissions and potential for OPEC import reductions outweigh biodiesel's disadvantages.
2-0 out of 5 stars Biodiesel isn't a solution for energy.
Beeing unemployed, I'm an agronomist here in Brazil. Then I know very much about energy and fuel from crops.Compared to ethanol, the same area produces 7 times more fuel then to biodiesel. If you read in portuguese, you can read my own article about biodisel in site http://www.israel3.com/article341.html .

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Book, Faulty Title
Other reviewers summarize Rising Tide accurately, though they might be more concise and they might mention that it's a spellbinding narrative, not a weighty tome. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, John Barry has become a media pundit, and he deserves his new visibility. Take a look at his other titles! You'll find all of them interesting, especially the tale of the Great Influenza of 1918. However, I fear Barry has been too optimistic in assessing the long-term changes in American society following the Mississippi Flood. The marked similarities in the inept and shocking response to Hurricane Katrina to the disaster of 1927 show very clearly that our America needs more than a natural catastrophe to generate positive change. It needs better leadership. Calvin Coolidge and George W Bush are certainly unlike, but they share faults: stubbornness, dogmatism, lack of empathy for the poor, and self-satisfied laziness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bigots, Liars and the Army Corps of Engineers
Setting: 1927, The Boston Club in New Orleans. Local power brokers in cahoots with the local newspaper (now known as "The Times Picayune") spreads lies about the integrity of levees along the Mississippi River in order to assuage "investor confidence" in the city of New Orleans. The levees as built by the Corps were disasters-in-waiting.
4-0 out of 5 stars 1927 Flood - Race, power politics, the river, and engineering
In the aftermath of Katrina many people are looking for answers and Rising Tide may provide clues of where to look (power politics, forces of nature, and bad engineering for starters). But Rising Tide tells a fascinating story well-worth reading on its own merits.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your Money
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT the best book to buy.
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Flaws
Tom Brown is, quite frankly, a terrible writer. Had I not heard him speak live, I would have thrown this book away and written Tom off as a half-educated moron who thinks he has something intelligent to say about touchy-feely, self-centered, pseudo-spiritual mumbo-jumbo. Fortunately, personal interaction with the man tells me that he is far more intelligent than his grasp of grammatical and large structural elements of writing would indicate. His famed charisma and passion for what he teaches is sincere. His understanding of the human condition, the material and spiritual deficiencies of this culture, and the importance of re-education (as opposed to political movements, fads, etc.) are what make his message so powerful to so many people.

I wrote this book review as an assignment for a class. Its intended audience was sociologists unfamiliar with network theory. The intended audience for the book though is much wider. If you want the math, read academic journals.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Six Degrees" - A Reaction to Professor Watts' Seminal Work
The book is not a user's guide to social networking. This is not "Networking for Dummies"!It is a thoughtful treatment by an academic of a fascinating topic - or to be more precise - an intriguing network of interrelated topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Watts turns complex ideas into clear concepts. This is Tipping Point on steroids.
If you've read Gladwell's excellent Tipping Point your appetite will possibly be whetted by the idea of connectivity and how ideas, trends, problems or diseases might spread. Network Science is a fascinating zone because our world has suddenly become a lot more connected - think even right here how Amazon has linked people like you and me, right here, right now.

Absolutely gorgeous, but they needed a little more thought put into the process. Many of the pictures have the primary interest in the center. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, could be better
As teacher of an Environmental Engineering course (at Ariel Academic College, Israel) and as consulting engineer, I find the book useful, but... Some areas are weak: Population and demand prognosis, Resource planning, Economic evaluation and optimization, Advanced water treatment (membrane and ion exchange technologies, for example), Desalination of brackish and sea water. Each chapter has a well explained exercise, a very useful feature, but most are non metric. All in all, I know of no better textbook, and it is worth its money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking for a catstrophe?
How much of human history has been shaped by catastrophic events? This exhaustively researched document seems like a natural place to find the answer.Unfortunately, the author's fascination with lurid details of human torture and dismemberment caused me to put the book down after just 60 blood-soaked pages. It's pretty clear that Mr. Key's interests in history do not run parallel to my own.I also found myself wondering about Key's qualifications as "Archaeological Journalist." I guess there are plenty of people who like reading tabloid-style history, and good luck to them, but I much prefer a calmer and scientific perspective of Derek Ager, in his book "The New Catastrophism, The Importance of the Rare Event in Geological History." -- Auralgo

3-0 out of 5 stars FORCED CONCLUSIONS?
Mr. Key's authoritative research created a unique and new approach to the writing of history. His synthesis of science, culture and history was informative and entertaining. He identifies the volcanic eruption between Sumatra and Java in 535 that led to a climatic disaster that he believes helped create the modern world. He did convince this reader that the "Dark Ages were more literal than figurative." However, many of his historical conclusions were overstated. Chapters 19-29 lacked a depth of evidence and were too speculative. His constant use of words like "undoubtedly" made the reader question if he truly beleived his entire thesis? I concluded that he was at most one third correct, but ended in disagreeing that climate changes "alone" caused the birth of the modern world. I give it 4 stars for effort, but only 3 in its totality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, relevant, but sometimes a bit stretched.
For the most part I found this book to be enjoyable, but it seems that Keys attempted in some areas to force his conclusion. Also, the same arguement seemed to be repeated far too often.Although I liked that the evidence of climate change was presented for essentially the entire planet, the conclusions at the end of each civilization were repetitive, simply restating the same thing (although, I suppose that was the point).I began to lose patience about 1/3 way through the book, but was able to persist through the conclusion.Perhaps it would have been better had Keys not spent so much time on minutae of Roman history and decline and had moved through the evidence quicker. The latter chapters on Asian and American experience were a little faster reading, likely due to the lack of minutae, largely due to the lack of records from which Keys could draw on.The final arguement on the causes of so much misfortune was compelling, but also left me feeling like our participation in the environment may all be for naught, since the Yellowstone caldera could explode at any moment, wiping us all out.I could not determine if this book wanted to be a book about climate change, history, or science. ...
