5-0 out of 5 stars Virgin Fishing
Do you ever wonder what it would be like to go back in time and be one of the first to truly fish virgin waters?Wonder, no more!Zane Grey's voyage into the Pacific is truly adventurous.Zane takes us to primitive islands that were not exactly on the map, and finds a tropical world of wonder. At times he and his cronies cannot land a fish, because the sharks are so thick, other times they grow weary of from too many fish. This book is a great treasure. It is like a fine Ky. bourbon, not to be consumed all at once, but sipped and enjoyed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars To much scientific information about squids, whales etc
The chapters about sea serpents was the best and the one about blobs and globsters was pretty interesting, but that is about it as far as descriptions of sea monsters go. The rest is mostly about actual identifiable creatures like the whale, shark, octopus and squid. The book mostly goes into the history of how man first came across such creatures of the sea and their initial reaction and then study of the creatures. One thing I found annoying about the book was the constant reference to movies and how incorrect their portrayal of certain creatures like the giant squid were. Also the author goes on a rant about the whale and how almost god-like they have become and how they are even a better species than mankind, he seems to have a bit of a fetish for the whale and it really weirded me out. He also seems to want to blame books for the destruction of many sea creatures, like the shark or whale, but I really doubt many whalers read "Moby Dick". I really went into this book with great curiosity and excitement and the first couple chapters were great but the chapter on squids, whales, etc etc. got a little boring, I would of just picked up a book about whales if I wanted to learn about them. What I really wanted to hear more about was actual sea monsters, which this book seems to leave out. 5 stars for the detailed information about almost everything under the sea, but only 3 stars forinformation of unknown sea monsters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just plain fun
"Monsters of the Sea" is a book that'll bring out the 11-year-old kid in anyone with a shred of curiosity. It's great fun.5-0 out of 5 stars Cryptozoological Writing at its Finest
Actually, as a writer, Ellis leaves something to be desired. He can be a little repetitive and disorganized at times (but is that more a criticism of him or his editor?). However, the content of this book is incredibly interesting, and it is presented very well. Ellis maintains a very good degree of subjectivity, considering the strange matters that he is discussing in the book. The topics, ranging from the myth and history of mermaids (which we now know as manatees and dugongs) to the strange blobs that have washed up on several beaches in the past century, to the giant squid which Ellis would go on to write an entire book about, are fascinating. The degree of detail he goes into when describing both the mythology behind these monsters, and the science and natural history of the creatures we now believe formulated these myths is amazing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This book arrived in a timely manner and was in good condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying to Hard
Where Kaplan's "Coral Reefs" manages to take a difficult field guide topic and conquer it,"Southeastern and Caribbean Seashores" Takes an impossible task and muddles it.I don't know what the people at Peterson's Field Guides was thinking! The topic is far to broad to include in one book, and Kaplan seems to try and make it broader. He includes coral reefs and things distinctly NOT on the shore as well as including topics already in other field guides.I do NOT want to belittle Kaplan (whom I enjoy) or Peterson's(who I think makes the best mass consumption field guides available) but unless you really need it, I would stay away from this book.It does win points for its illustrations and Kaplans knowledge and writing style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home Without It!
I have taken Kaplan's field guide to seashores to Florida Keys, the Bahamas, the USVI, The BVI, Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Curacao, and have found the book to be indispensible. No matter which island, each seashore seemed familiar, and with a little judicious reading beforehand,I understood whatever natural phenomena I saw, from snorkelling in the shallows to walking the rocky shore to crawling around the red mangrove roots.I would no sooner leave this field guide home when I go to the Carribbean or Florida, than leave home my Michelin Guide to Europe when I go there.I recommend the Field Guide to Seashores to all nature lovers and snorkelers who want to make the best of their trip to the the Caribbean or Florida. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Offers the insights of a modern hermit who's lived most of his life along the Mississippi
This new collection of 'rat tales' by a confirmed Last River Rat offers the insights of a modern hermit who's lived most of his life along the Mississippi. Like Huck Finn, Kenny Salwey has a host of adventures to recount: he's a hunter, trapper and woodsman alike and he is also a fine storyteller and even an expert on environmental issues - so his essay and story collection is packed with experience and insights.
5-0 out of 5 stars TalesofaRiverRat
An excellent sequel to The Last River Rat.Kenny tells tales and spins yarns that make you want to read much more. Each story tells not only of life along and on the River in Kenny's own words, but how these experiences have shaped his life.He then uses these lessons to teach us how precious life is, be it the short life of abrown trout, a hunting dog, or a squirrel named Dusky. There is plenty of humor in this book, but interwoven with that are stories of life that cause us to stop and say to ourselves,"These are some powerful lessons to be learned. "Kenny has given many people a different outlook concerning nature itself, life in the swamp, and growing up in a time that was much less complicated.Sometimes we just have to stop and smell the skunk cabbage.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read
This is a very good book as far as reading goes. You could also learn a few things in the process. There are many "how-to" books out there and a true adventure-fishing story can be a refreshing change. So if you are interested in good, entertaining real life fishing stories or accounts, pick this book up.4-0 out of 5 stars A true pioneer of an untapped sport
It is only in my dreams that I will ever see fish the size and in the abundance that Zane Grey and other pioneers of big game sportfishing have seen.As an avid big game fisherman I always dream of the day that I will hook into a monster swordfish or tuna such as Zane Grey has.Any fisherman can relate to the persistance and effort that Zane Grey put into every outing he made and then putting it in writing for those who could not do so themselves. In the days when Zane was fishing nothing yet was exploited and it is great to read about the way things used to be and hope that one day we will be able to restore our oceans to there once primative state. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Introspective.
For a land-bound Arkansas boy, BEACH WALKS opens new vistas of nature and beauty that I have not experienced as a way of life but only in passing on too-quick vacations. But Thatcher's introspection transcends the Coastallife to all who are one with God and nature.

4-0 out of 5 stars A small, beautifully written treasure of daily reflections.
Beach Walks is a lovely series of daily musings by George Thatcher, whose way of writing reminds me of paintings with words.George has an acute and creative sense of observation as well as a rich interior life!I am givingthis book for gifts; a friend told me yesterday she reads my gift daily asa kind of devotional.Susan McNease

5-0 out of 5 stars Its essence is universal, transcending time and place.
Beach Walks is more than a collection of thoughts inspired by years of beach walking the Mississippi Gulf Coast by an observant, curious and perceptive beach walker. These thoughts, often lyrical, are enhanced withvarious quotations from Psalms to Mae West and Stalin, and frequentlyinclude fascinating scientific and historical facts, as well asentertaining trivia.Though this book will be especially meaningful tothose familiar to the Gulf Coast, its essence is universal, transcendingtime and place. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellently titled book
This is a great introduction to wetlands ecosystems! This book begins with an introduction to what a wetland ecosystem is and how it works, giving examples of wetlands in various parts of the US. Each type of wetland ecosystem is presented with a list of plants and fungi found there described in moderate detail, including their niche in the ecosystem. Plants and fungi that may have special interest to the reader are examined in more detail at the end of this section. This book also covers the year-round changes in this ecosystem, tips on observation, specimen collection, and on keeping a nature journal. A section at the end of the book offers various activities and investigations that the reader may find interesting and helpful in understanding more about this threatened ecosystem.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Down Memory Lane to a town that would not die . . .
This book is part travelogue, part natural history, part regional history, and part personal memoir. After many years as a writer, poet, and university professor, the author takes an 80-mile journey from his home in Tucson to the old mining town of Bisbee in the southeast corner of Arizona. Just a stone's throw from the Mexican border, Bisbee has been the site of copper mines, starting in the 1880s and lasting until the 1970s, when conglomerate Phelps Dodge finally ceased operation, having created a huge open pit and left mountains of tailings.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with some caveats
The author was a critical part of the movement in the 1980's to establish conservation measures for the East Coast Striped Bass population. The first chapters provide a historical background for the near collapse of the bass population in the early 1980's. Persons interested in environmental movements will find interesting Russell's description of how he along with other environmentalists caused first increases in the minimum capture length, and then a moritorium on landing the bass in several states. The first part of the book also reveals with honesty, the sport fishing bias of the author. There is also a touching story about a handmade surfcasting rod.
5-0 out of 5 stars Game Fish or Not? Read it and You Decide!
Excellent, comprehensive history of the fight to save this magnificent fish. If your a die hard striper fisherman, you should read this book. Also speaks to the present challenges facing the striper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the love of fishing
If you fish, you'll love this book.If you don't fish (but have a loved one that does) you'll love this book.Dick Russell chronicles the history of saving the bass in a noncomplicated, factual, way.He also includes the personalities of members of both sides. It makes you stop and wonder what humans are doing to our environment. If you do stop and think, it can be downright scary.Anecedotes are included about individual fisherman that let you recognize your own fisherman in your family. You wonder who wrote the anecdote(Russell or your fisherman). You end up appreciating the fish and its waters and hopefully understand that it is everyone's responsibility to protect all.Catch and release! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A diversity of topics drawn from the unique Pine Barrens and coastal ecosystems of New Jersey
Natural Wonders Of The Jersey Pines And Shores by the late educator, journalist, historian, and sportsman Robert A. Peterson (1956-2003) covers a diversity of topics drawn from the unique Pine Barrens and coastal ecosystems of New Jersey including the flora, fauna, geological formations, and natural forces of the area. Much of the material was adapted from his regular newspaper column in "The Egg Harbor News". The informed and informative text is wonderfully enhanced with the nature photography of Michael A. Hogan and Steve Greer. This posthumous publication of Robert Peterson's Natural Wonders Of The Jersey Pines And Shores is a welcome contribution by a gifted writer whose "insatiable curiosity about nature and history" make the New Jersey Pine Barrens and beaches a truly engaging read from beginning to end for the non-specialist general reader as well as the student of nature's ecosystems, as well as a welcome contribution to American Ecological Studies and Environmental Studies library reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Wonders of the Jersey Pines and Shore
As a frequent visitor to Southern New Jersey, I am always amazed and delighted by the wonderful scenery and history that can be enjoyed there.Reading "Natural Wonders of the Jersey Pines and Shore" has enhanced those perceptions and has added so much more to my depth of understanding about the area.Robert Peterson does a fantastic job both educating and entertaining the reader with all sorts of insights and stories which capture one's imagination.Beyond the text, however, some of the best parts of the book are the amazing photographs mainly taken by Michael Hogan (with some additonal photographs by Steve Greer.) Michael has done an outstanding job of photographing the varied topics in unique ways which allow the reader to enjoy each adventure with him, bringing the area to life even if you have never visited it yourself.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves nature, photography or New Jersey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Risky business!
I am an experienced technical diver and was fascinated with that aspect of this book. Mr. Lenihan is indeed a good story teller. I wouldn't be caught dead doing some of the dives that they did on air-- but then again they were diving years ago when no mixed gasses were easily available. I feel that I have the right to take souvenirs from shipwrecks if I've gone to the trouble and expense to get to them and they're going to just corrode away in the sea. But Mr. Lenihan makes his points about preservation without being obnoxious and self-righteous and I like that. He made me think enough about the value of these wrecks that even though I'll probably still take small souvenirs, my newly informed conscience would keep me from taking anything too nice. Don't buy this book if you want to know the best and safest ways to deep dive or cave dive. I'm not saying they aren't real good divers but they dive with air and a prayer. Still, in all, I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A deep journey
Submerged is not only the title of the book but describes my feeling when reading it. Lenihan took me on a deep journey. I'm only an amateur diver but the simple clarity of the writing allowed to me a glimpse into the professional side of underwater work. The book was compelling but I must say at times I was uneasy-there was a dark side to even the lighter narratives. He and his diving team had some of the most frightening and even bizarre experiences I've ever read about and ones I personally would not find worth the risks. Nevertheless I must give them credit for such extreme dedication to historic preservation. I read the book over three evenings and most enjoyed the personal stories. My husband found the same book interesting for very different reasons. He was most interested in the history and romance of the shipwrecks.

2-0 out of 5 stars waxing prosaic
the stories in and of them selves for the most part are interesting however a major drawback is that he can not write. he says he is waxing prosaic. and guess what he is absolutely correct. for a much better examppe of underwater adventures and vastly superior writing would be shadow divers. the writing makes this almost unfinishable however it is written at a grade 10 level so it doesnt take much time to blow through it. newmarket press should have insisted on a real writer to tell the story . this is truly a waste of very interesting material ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read
I enjoyed all the tales in this book and found the writing style flowed nicely despite what several other reviewers have reported.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clam fishing in a bitter environment
In a two-week period in 1999, four commercial clamming boats sank off the Atlantic Coast costing ten lives. The author, a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, recounts the known facts of the sinkings, the lives of those who drowned and those who survived, and the interrelated circumstances. Many of the elements of the tragedies are familiar: heavy weather, Coast Guard helicopters, survival suits, men vanishing into the night.Campbell intelligently weaves in the real economic and commercial pressures on fishermen with details of the lives of hard-working men. These clammers have no illusions about their dangerous trade. They know they risk death, but most could not earn nearly the same wages elsewhere. The efforts of regulatory agencies to protect workers, preserve breeding stocks, and stabilize the markets come under scrutiny as well.An excellent choice for those interested in commercial fishing or sea stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars PRETTY GOOD BOOK
I AGREE WITH ONE OF THE OTHER REVIEWERS THAT THIS WAS A PRETTY GOOD BOOK BUT NOT AS GOOD AS SOME FROM SPIKE WALKER AND THE PERFECT STORM BUT NONE THE LESS A GOOD READ ESPECIALLY TO LEARN ABOUT THE CLAMMING INDUSTR I DO BIELEVE THAT THE THE SHIP WRECK STORIS ARE JUST AS GUT WRENCHING ... Read more
