4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful work by R. Carson
Rachel Carson's work is still a great place to get insights on the workings of the ocean. Even with the advancement of oceanography and marine biology, the ocean is still a source of wonder and mystery, and still in need of our protection from abuse. Vast as the oceans are, their ecosystems can still be altered by human activity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Says Science & Literature Can't Co-exist Under 1 Cover?
Wow!!!It is amazing that this book is over 50 years old.As a high school student, I had to read this book for Ecology.Rachel Carson's book is an eye-opener.It was some 50 years ago. And, it still is."The Sea Around Us" is truly a classic.Carson gives us all an insight on what would happen if we mistreat the natural environment -- especially the oceans around us.Sadly, today, some of these prophecies are becoming a reality.I agree with a fellow reviewer. This book should be mandatory reading for all students.Maybe if more people read this book, we would all respect nature just a little better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who loves the beach
It is difficult to believe that this book is over 50 years old.The recommendations are still valid and elusive today.Only when the general public accepts the need to protect the environment will things change. That is why this book should be required reading for all students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning
This large book contains page after page of gorgeous, jaw-dropping photographs.Mr. Rotman quite artfully employs macro photography to achieve a psychodelic affect that will cause involuntary smiles and appreciative head-nodding through out.I suspect most photographs are taken on night dives. The spectacular clarity and dark backgrounds conspire with the brilliant colors, textures, shapes and patterns of his subjects to transcend from photos to abstract art.I am very grateful to Mr. Rotman for sharing this view of our world.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful
Having never heard of Rachel Carson except in relation to "Silent Spring", I was pleasantly surprised on first reading her writing in this book by the masterly and near-poetic elegance of her prose. Written in the 1950s, before nature documentaries allowed most of us to see the wonders of marine life with our own eyes, Carson's ability to introduce those wonders to us through evocatively-written description alone (with occasional illustrations) remains truly amazing. The problem is that a generation raised on visual stimuli would probably find it quite difficult to sustain enough patience to go through the whole book, since it does make substantial demands on one's sense of imagination. I found myself struggling by the time I had finished two chapters - even though each chapter is generally about a different kind of seashore (rock, sand, or coral reef), trying to visualise one fascinating organism after another just got rather tedious and confusing. My recommendation to other readers would be to maximise your enjoyment of this book by reading it at the seaside, or in conjunction with a relevant documentary on the Discovery Channel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative as a textbook, entertainment like a novel
I just finished this and I can't wait to read the rest of the author's work.Carson has a gift for describing the world around her and a command of the language that few seem to appreciate today. This is basically a natural history book written as if it where a novel. In "Edge of the Sea" she describes seashores, the environment and how it defines the animals and plants that a visitor will see.She concentrates on America's East Coast. The text left me with a longing to be there. Where modern writers would use pictures, Carson uses words. This book would be good (4 stars) for anyone who enjoys written imagery. If you already love the sea then it deserves 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenally Informative
For a book of this size (just over 200 pgs) it contains a fascinating amount of information on an incredibly interesting subject. The breadth and depth of information covered in the space of so few pages is astounding and yet the author doesn't skimp on details. Should appeal to a wide and educated audience. It's written at a level that neither speaks down to the reader nor trys to overwhelm or impress, but merely inform. Much more could be shared, but I would simply encourage the reader to purchase the book and see for themselves. Outstanding! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For "Deadliest Catch" junkies!
As a huge fan of "Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel I'm very interested in learning the true stories of these fishermen.Watching the show reminds me how easy my life is and kinda boring too!Spike Walker's "Nights of Ice" is a non-fiction compilation of stories about rescues of fishing ships in the waters around Alaska.
3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining subject--marginal writing
I read this on a trip to Alaska, so I got into it's "spirit" on location. The stories are quite entertaining, but when writers make junior-varsity comments and mistakes, it makes me wonder about the veracity of the actual stories:4-0 out of 5 stars Nights of Ice...Spike Walker is great read

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
This book unveils the fascinating world of the sea. Written in a suspenseful style, William Langewiesche, carefully constructs his plot that the sea remains untamed and uncontrolled. I borrowed the audio version of this book from a local library really enjoyed hearing the author recount stories of bravery, treachery, and catastrophe. Especially interesting to me was the story of the Estonia, the major ferry that tragically sunk in less than 20 killing almost 700 people. I recommend this to those who enjoy non-fiction, investigative reporting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read
This book is on several different aspects of the merchant shipping industry. As a former radio officer on U.S. merchant tankers from 1986 to 1995, I can say that lawlessness, choas and crime does not apply much to U.S. vessels. For other vessels that are flags of convenience the story is a lot different.I think this author is a gifted writer. The story about the hijacking of the Alondra Rainbow in the Malacca Straits is very interesting and suspenseful. There can't be a better read about the sinking of the Ro/Ro vessel Estonia than this book offers. It is worth the price of purchase just for this narrative alone. The end of the book about the shipbreaking operations in India is also interesting. The author seems to get into a bit of the "save the environment" mentality though, and since I think this guy lives in Seattle he may be a bit of an environmental nut.But that doesn't come out much in the book except a little towards the end.His overall theme is the damage that is caused to merchant vessels (and the people riding them) due to the carlessness or fraud of owners, governments, ship's agents, maritime authorities, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars Our next frontier
Control of the world's oceans was once considered a primal goal of the foreign policy of many nations. The advent and spread of air, then jet travel has reduced the importance of the sea, especially in terms of human transportation. But the sea is still the medium by which most of our goods are shipped, and as world trade increases, more and more produce is shipped over the ocean every day. This dichotomy then leads to an interesting situation. As people increasingly move about by air, the importance, and danger of sea travel recedes from public attention and the political limelight. But as more and more of the goods we use everyday are brought to us from places oceans away, the importance of oceanic commerce grows.Hence the growth in the shipping and shipbuilding industries and piracy. This then is the subject of this book, industry, crime, chaos and anarchy on the world's oceans.

5-0 out of 5 stars best general underwater photo book i have
i have purchased many underwater photo books and this is my favorite . i also love jim church's guide to nikonos systems but the two should not be compared because they have a different subject matter. this book is geared more towards film systems than digital. the pictures are a great break from the usual because they are mostly from scotland and other less common areas. this book stands alone in its style. i was very impressed when i checked it out at a book store and had to have it. P.S. it was recently published and is modern in its content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to marine photography
This is a very satisfactory book for three reasons: (1) The text is well written, no-nonsense, to the point, and technically accurate as far as I can tell, (2) the photographs are the best that I have seen so far and, more importantly, they complement the text, and (3) it emphasizes photography in temperate waters. Because I live in the temperate zone and cannot afford to casually visit tropical reefs, this aspect is particularly interesting. The only thing that I would improve in this book is to expand the discussion on evaluating mixed-light scenes (p. 141). From my land experience, this makes or breaks a photograph. Because this book assumes little or no prior knowledge of photography, this is a point worth emphasizing. Also, I find incident light meters indispensable on land, are they usable in underwater photography? Overall, this book is a great value. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Be aware!
I read this book with great interest since I was going to Hawaii to snorkel. All main geographical areas where shark attacks occur are covered from South Africa to Hawaii.A description of all the species of shark which are involved in attacks are covered as well at the statistics of their frequency. The history of human attitudes toward sharks is discussed. In the early nineteen hundreds people eradicated sharks with dynamite. Now we study them. The evolving theories about how dangerous sharks are is very interesting reading. It was thought that sharks were not interested in people. Now we know they are and fighting back when attacked is recommended. There are other books which give better illustrations of the various species. It was interesting to read that the bull shark cruises many rivers throughout the world where it attacks people.Ultimately this book reads at the level of a newspaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO interesting!!!
I love this book.It is really a bunch of newspaper articles on shark attacks with a little background information on each one.If you are someone who studies sharks, you won't like it.If you are like me, a person who reads the newspaper and is intrigued by the horror of the thought of getting attacked, you will not be able to put it down.I think it's just fascinating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could have been educational. Sensationalist slander
This back, like many others of its kind, does very little to examine the animals themselves. Peter Benchley himself said he could never write Jaws today, and yet people still right books like these that revel in the ferocity of a shark attack rather than look at the bigger story.
