Difficult to Read
Well there is no doubt that this book contains a large amount of information, it CANNOT be used as an introductory text.It is much to difficult to comprehend, and Wetzel makes absolutely no effort to teach the concepts.Here merely presents a synthesis of limnological research.

Good as a Limnology Primer
This is an excellent general reference text. Can not say enough about the excellent content of this text. But it is need of an edition update with information for lake mapping and restoration.Dr. C.L. Nelson of St. CloudState University, St. Cloud, MN has an excellent small text on physicallimnology for the mapping aspect. This book does do an excellent job on thebiological aspects of limnological work.

My view of the Wetzel's limnology book
The book contains a lot of information related to lakes. It�s a complete work about the conditions on this systems. Include a study about the performance of the ionic particles in this systems. It�s a suitable bookfor students like me, to understand the freshwater ecology. ... Read more

Freshwater Invertebrates of North America
I purchased this title as a fly fisherman wanting to learn more about entomology.This was a very helpful book written at a high school level which is good for someone wanting to tackle the subject for the first time and to get a good grasp of the vocabulary and science before moving on to more detailed college texts on the subject.
Extremely useful to both amateurs and professionals
This book is an excellent guide to family-level invertebrate identification.It has wonderful pictures and excellent background information on the organisms.

must have Pond guide for Everyone
The experience and common sense approach may be frowned upon by the pros, but that is because it cuts into their profits!
Poor value
This book is written in a very "folksy" style.The author does provide instructions for constructing "home-made" filters and other types of equipment.Regrettably, the paperback version of this book seems to be a xerox copy of the original hardcover edition.All of the pictures are blobs of black and gray, which renders them essentially useless.

Good Intro to Ponds
This book was very helpful answering questions about pond and filter construction, pumps, fish, etc.He answers all of the basic questions and offers ideas and solutions to things you've never thought of if you are a beginner. ... Read more

This is the 3rd book in the "Audubon Society Nature Guides" series that I've purchased, and they continue to be a pleasure to read and use.For anyone who lives near, will be travelling to, or has a general interest in Wetlands, this book is an essential.Not only is it beautifully illustrated and easy to use, but it's also a great general guide to Wetlands in the US.I am in the Chicagoland region, and almost all of the book applies to our area.Highly reccomeded for anyone from the novice to Wetland professional. ... Nature lover learns things she didn't know....little book packs BIG punch!
I'm very much a nature lover. When this book arrived, I saw the small size (about 6" x 4") I felt a little dissappointed. I thought at least it would be something 'cute' for my kids, but would be far too basic for me.
A favorite for young science lovers.
If your child loves science and has an interest with frogs, insects, and pond life, this little book is a wonderful colorfully illustrated book they would surely enjoy!Informative and detailed illustrations to go along with easy reading of plants, birds, fish, and microscopic life you can find in a pond.Small enough to place in their back pocket or book bag.I think Golden Guide books St. Martin present a very easy book to understand and explore all kinds of animal and plant life.

Perfect for an amateur naturalist, or a bored family
This is far different from other books in the same series that I have come across. While all of the Golden Guides contain some information beyond that needed for identification, this book has much more of an emphasis on broadly educating readers about the intricacies of pond life.

Reclaiming the Greek Heritage: A Modern Mathematical Philosophy
Rudy Rucker deals with the concept of Infinity in regard to our mental conceptions and the structure of reality.The question is whether or not the concept of Infinity makes sense, and then the relation of finite thought and human consciousness relates to the possibility of infinites in the structure of reality.

This book is spooky!I love it!The infinite is such a fascinating topic.I contemplate it on a daily basis and wrestle with some of its concepts almost constantly.This book is a must read for anyone who has ever wanted to know more on this subject.Robot conciousness is an incredible topic and really makes one think about what conciousness really means.Some of the concepts are difficult to relate to, but give it time and open your mind.If I could, I would give this book infinity - 1 stars!

Attention to Detail
Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much.I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced.Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.

Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Entertaining and Educational
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know.I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened.The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written. ... Beautiful Pictures!
I just want to leave a notation for all who get this book.BE CAREFUL OPENING PAGES!The photos on each page are actually on photographic paper!This makes each photo excellent in detail and color, but this book needs to have pages turned with the care of a photo album, and not the casual nature of a book.

Excellent book for new african cichlidists!
Despite all the other bad reviews I think this is a great book to dive into African Cichlids.I have owned an aquarium maintenance service for years and have had only one african cichild tank.I bought a bunch of them and threw them all in a 55 gallon tank.It looked great until the fish grew up.After a year or so I only had a couple fish left, most killed by a large pseudotrophus sp.This book explained why and I was finally able to understand these fish.The book goes into species compatibility and their social behavior and explains why you mix certain species, male/female ratios, numbers of each species required, size of tank and how to keep aggressive ones.I feel the topic is so vast with over 1500 species that no one book can cover everything.I'm finding the most difficult part of African Cichlids is the scientific names - some are very difficult to say much less knowing which ones you can house together!If you have had aquariums in the past and know nothing about African Cichlids I would recommend this as your first book!It really informs the reader of the broad overview of what you are getting into and the problems associated with it.It leaves you informed and, if interested, wanting to buy another book or two, specifically one with photos of all the species like Pablo Tepoot's "Pictoral Guide".

Not Much Success With CICHLIDS !
More time is spent on discussing basic aquarium set-up and care, than on Malawi Cichlids.Must have had commercial sponsers, they are mentioned throughout.Other than a beginner at cichlids, nothing much new to be learned.Scientific names are outdated, but in the fast changing world of Malawi Cichlids that's not surprising.Better be up on your metric system, there's not an inch, foot, yard, pound or gallon in the book! ... Earth Ponds: The Country Pond Maker's Guide to Building, Maintenance and Restoration
i was looking for a book to help me design and build a pond, this book was more of a story, with a few helpful idea's.

I was looking for more techinical and not so wordy reading.It was interesting reading in a Walden's Pond sort of way.I want to build a pond myself and have the equipment to do it.But wanted to know How the big boys do it.

Lots of Prose......No nuts and bolts.
All those pages, all those words............yet if you are looking to satiate an appetite for information that will allow the building and managing of a pond...you will go hungry.Read more

Revisiting Walden
On a family vacation many years ago, I visited Walden Pond and walked all around it. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Thoreau's Walden, the Walden Woods Project published, in 2004, this illustrated edition of the work with stunning color photographs by Scott Miller of Walden Pond and its environs.The Walden Woods Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of Walden Pond and to the legacy of Thoreau. I found this book a fitting memorial of my walk around Walden Pond and of my earlier readings of Walden.The lovely edition, photographs, and memories inspired me to turn again to Thoreau's book.
Walden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition of the American Classic
I recently sent this to my daughter because during a phone converstation, I thought she sounded depressed, so I didn't actually see the book myself, but she called me to tell my how much she loved it. I could hear it in her voice as she decribed it to me. She said a friend was at the house when it was delivered and while looking at one picture, in a quiet voice, her friend said "I want to go there".

Self Help At Its Best
This is one of the most influential books in American history. I picked it up for the first time in thirty years only to realize that Throreau's philosophy had long ago permeated my being. I remember being blown away by my first reading more than half a century ago, but with each immersion new depths are achieved.
