The pictures were what I was interested in.They are clear and very accurate.I would liked to have had more detail on the history of each bird but over all, it has helped me a great deal.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comedian As Scientist Entertains As He Informs
I picked this book up recently for the first time since high-school, some 15-plus (!) years ago.Maybe it was Steve Irwin's death, or a viewing of the documentary Grizzly Man, that got me to thinking about it- either way, I'm glad I did.I'd forgotten what a wacky character Farley Mowat was, and how much more there is to this quick read than dry scientific reporting.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Wolves, please don't cry."
NEVER CRY WOLF is Farley Mowat's first-person reminiscence of his time spent studying wolves in the Canadian arctic. NEVER CRY WOLF, first published in 1963, was one of the earliest, most widely-read, and most effective conservation narratives ever penned. It's Russian edition (the title of which, literally translated back into English, is WOLVES, PLEASE DON'T CRY) was responsible for a Soviet ban on wolf hunting that spared the animals in their natural habitat and gained Mr. Mowat a notorious reputation at the U.S. State Department, which banned his subsequent entry into the United States.
3-0 out of 5 stars Three Stars for Entertainment, Zero for veracity
I can't believe all the reviewers gushing about this book. It is propaganda, propaganda for a good cause. But, like all propaganda, it is not bound by truth or even by facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawks and Birds of Prey
This is by far the very best book I have ever seen. The photos and details are just Great. I would advise anyone that watchs for these beautiful birds to have this as a guide!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors
This is the best photographic guide to north american raptors available. The photos are very clear so you can see details on plumage. It also includes multiple photos of the species that have morphs, which is very helpful in the field. This is not a book I would recommend if you are using it for written reference. But I give it 5 stars for a field reference guide!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful field guide, shows variability of morphs
This is simply the best field guide for North American diurnal raptors that I have seen.Unlike some other photgraphic guides, it provides several images of each species in poses that one is likely to see in the field: perched and soaring from above and the side (showing field marks of top of wing and tail). It shows several examples of different morphs and ages for most birds. This is critical in understanding the variability in markings within a species. In addition, it has a section on field identification problems, detailing differences between similar looking birds. To my knowledge, there is no substitute.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful memoir
This was a book I hated to see end.The descriptions of Corfu, family members and residents of the island, and wildlife were lyrical and loving. The author was a keen observer of his environment and was able to share his observations vividly with the reader. His humorous anecdotes were of laugh-aloud variety.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant summer read!
My Family and Other Animals is about a ten-year-old boy named Gerald who moves to the sun-soaked island Corfu, Greece with his family to escape the dreary and gloomy climate in London. There, he encounters many different animals and people. I absolutely loved this book because it was really funny. There was a lot of action in this book. Durrell lovingly described each and every animal that he owned. He also told every detail of the settings, so I felt like I was really in Corfu!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for quick reference
If you already know a bit about corals, this is a nice book to have around for quick reference.I especially like that it lists similar corals and gives some basic information on how to tell them apart. It can be deceptive, though. The information it gives on the specific corals is very general, and should not be considered a good source for research on a coral you're planning to actually buy.Don't get me wrong, though.I'm happy I have this book, but I'd suggest supplementing it with a text such as Eric Bourneman's "Aquarium Corals: Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History".This text will actually give you much more specific information on requirements to care for the corals, as well as some better techniques to identify certain corals, since many look very similar, and there's no way any book could show every possible shape and color for many species.

3-0 out of 5 stars good picture book
Book has lots of good pictures to help you identify corals.IN this manner it can be used as a min-coral atlas.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good First Reference Text, pity about poor quality binding and packaging

3-0 out of 5 stars sizes missing
Does not contain more than photos and a small text box per creature. There is no mention of sizes, something of great importance when stocking an aquarium. For me, it is too quick of a reference quide. The information (and much beyond that) contained here can be found in Nilsen's "Reef Secrets".

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference text, pity about poor packaging
This is a wonderful first reference text from Julian Sprung. Well set out and communicates the necessary information in an undestandable way. A word of advice, don't get this text in a hardcover version as the pages are poorly bound and Amazon's inability to adequate package the book results in damaged corners. Why pay more to get damaged goods and the Amazon run-around?

5-0 out of 5 stars The book all aquatic chemists should keep on reading
Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No
This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it.
An excellent book. My son loves it. He has the other 3-4 books that has been written by Jane Yolen and falls within the same dinosaur theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your kids like dinosaurs...
I love this book. It is a book that my 2 year old is interested in while I am slipping some numbers education in. Besides the fact that it has dinosaurs...

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun for Your Little Dinosaur
HOW DO DINOSAURS COUNT TO TEN not only provides a way for very young children to learn to count. It also feeds into the way a kid thinks. The various dinosaurs who do the counting have human mons who cheer them on to learn.Kids will identify with the concept.A child can be a dinosaur today, and his Mom can be a person. Also Mom stays in the background making the dinosaur/child the center of attention, providing a supportive 'I can do it myself' climate. While cartoonish and playful, the pictures represent dinosaurs accurately enough to recognize them. T. Rex helps with the counting, as does Ptaradactyl, and a few others I can't spell or pronounce. But as I've learned from my 5 year-old-neighbor, the kids should be have no trouble informing the adults in their lives which dion is who.As the dinosaurs count, they play with the toys they are counting, which adds to the fun.The books themselves are sturdy and will withstand rough handling by really little tykes. They're also a convenient size for toddlers to hold.Anybody who has a junior dinosaur fan around the house should look at HOW DO DIONSAURS COUNT TO TEN. ... I like the selection of songs that are avaliable. They are well recorded and there duration is fine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs
Given the tendency of birds to generally move about rapidly (much more so than plants!), I find that being able to identify their song is often more of an effective key to positive identification than is sight recognition. Sound familiar? And do you live in western North America? If so, you might find this CD set of bird songs a valuable tool. I do. I especially like the length of the samples that are provided for each species. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
A few years ago I purchased "Birding By Ear" by Richard Walton & Robert Lawson. It's good, but I was disappointed by the small number of species represented (my version has 90 birds on three CD's, though Amazon's current offering appears to be abridged onto one CD).Each track has detailed verbal descriptions of the songs, and disc 3 includes some practice mixes of different habitats so you can test yourself.I think it would make a good tutorial for someone just getting started in listening to bird songs. But for me "Birding By Ear" didn't work. The detailed verbal descriptions got in the way of listening to the songs.I wanted more birds and fewer words.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Train yourself and train your dog
After reading the first few chapters of this great book I tried one of the simplest techniques and it worked! The book is well written and easy to understand. The author makes his training points by mingling the training method with interesting stories of problem dogs that have been corrected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
We have implemented just a couple of the suggestions so far and have already seen improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars It just makes sense!
This is THE book for training your dog in my opinion. We have a very stubborn Beagle puppy who was showing many signs of thinking she was the alpha dog. After reading this book and applying the simple principles we have a changed dog! She is calm and responsive. We were at our wit's end and our obedience trainer recommended this book and it has been fabulous. I would recommend reading this book before you ever put a foot in a breeder's kennel. It will help you so much. It does work for older dogs too, so if nothing else has worked...try this book! This woman is a genius. ... Read more

Cherry Hill has done it again. Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is a must- have for all horse owners. It includes grooming tips, a barn-care schedule, and even a suggested layout for your farm! It also includes tips on choosing land.

Ms. Hill has written a book that fits in well with the psyches of horse-lovers--those who may have just one horse, a herd or stableful, or know that someday they will be a horseowner. It's a book to inspire, inform, encourage, and gently correct when necessary.

A large volume, not easily used, in the field. The authors presume a good knowledge of North American birds--so you need a Sibley in addition. Unfortunately carrying the Sibley will remind you of how much more difficult to use this volume is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Save your money.Spend time with your horse.Go to an actual clinic or trainer if you can afford it.Parelli's writing is difficult. The concepts are difficult to understand and there is little practical or useful information.Horses are fairly simple.Parelli makes it sound exotic. It's not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man and horse unite
I would recommend or even make it mandatory for everyone even thinking of going near a horse to read this book. Pat Parelli gets it from the horses point of view, and makes it easy for us to get it too. I have a 2, 3 and 4 yr horse. I have worked with all of them utilizing the theories presented in this book. I have also bought his partnership level 1 and the tools to go with it. It works, my horses are responsive and a joy to be with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Popular but expensive and often unsafe
Mr Parelli writes in a self-opinionated, pompous style about horses, trying to give the impression that he is the guru of all things equine. While his methods have undoubtedly enabled a large number of people to improve their relationship with their horse, one must remember that there are untold millions who have a wonderful relationship with their horse which owes nothing to either his expensively-marketed system or the costly, cutely-named gadgets which seem to be an integral part of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on bird behaivor I've seen
Without stepping up to a college textbook on Ornithology, this has been the best book I've found generally availible to the public on bird behaivor. David Allen Sibley is an authority on the subject and that's good enough for me. The college textbooks are a bit dry and uninteresting, however this book is anything but. A perfect companion to his other books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a non-birder...
I'm not a birder, though it seems like an interesting hobby. But I just look at the birds at the feeders and birdbath in the back yard and think, "I wonder what that one is?"So, I bought "The Sibley Guide to Birds" (which is outstanding) on the recommendation of a birder friend, and that led me to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Safari Companion
Excellent safari companion showing various animals and describing them, their habitat, etc.Recommended for anyone going on safari.

5-0 out of 5 stars African animal sighting tips your mother never told you and your father didn't know
This is a book of biblic quality for the uninitiated.I did not appreciate the diversity of the wildlife available in Kenya and Tanzania.Wow, this is worthwhile study guide as a prologue to your journey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not find it that useful in E. Africa
The pictures are black and white drawings. We brought this and the Audubon Society Guide to African Wildlife (or something like that) and we much preferred the Audubon book.It was more compact, had a durable vinyl cover and had color pictures with quick facts on each animal - which is really what you want in the moment on a bumpy safari game drive.I would get the other book instead. ...
