5-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to take this book apart from the very beginning...
A vegan roomie lent me this book, and I was reluctant to read it, but decided I would, just so that I could have the pleasure of finding the fallacies in it and have something to argue with her about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sickening Death Factories
There are no more excuses, there is no more room for rationalization if we are to claim "honesty" and "compassion" for our species. The factory farming and slaughter of animals for "food" and other human purposes is a sickness of the soul and it is time to change in favor of logic and compassion. This brilliant book exposes the hypocrisies of being a meat-eater in this day and age and challenges us to admit the truth and to change for the better. If we don't and get angry at the messenger, we only validate the worst fears for our species.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please read this riveting book and pass it on!
"Eternal Treblinka" is a very sobering read. It should be required reading in all high schools and available in all libraries. Charles Patterson's excellent book offers a riveting comparison between our historical and continuing insensitive treatment of animals and the horrific treatment of Jews in the Holocaust.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read
I don't know why there aren't hundreds of reviews on this book, because it's absolutely magic. If you're looking for comfort and evidence, buy it! I am grateful Elizabeth shared her insights with us, readers. As I am in the learning process of becoming an animal communicator myself, I am doing research in reading as much as I can. But first of all I am a grieving person who's animal friend recently died and I am besides myself with grief over this loss. Elizabeth shares her knowledge that all is as it's supposed to be. She enlights, she has such insight, and yet, as a scientifically educated woman, she does not take things for granted. The care-humans (as she calls them) of the pets, deceased or alive, acknowledge her words over and over again. Facts. I read this book of 143 page's in one day, up to late at night. Just couldn't stop. It was one of the most beautiful gifts I received. So just buy it :-)
5-0 out of 5 stars would you like to see how an animal views death?read this book
Judging from the response to this book, not many people buy this book, but a lot of people see the site. That said, I found this book to be quite intriguing.Like "1smileycat", I had to recently put down my favorite pet (in my case, my beloved dog of 10 years).I actually found out about this book from looking at 1smileycat's profile (so thanks :) )and bought it.Severino's book is a nice read and offers an interesting view of dying, death, and euthanasia- all, as the title suggests, told from an animal's point of view.A good read and definite recommendation for anyone grieving the loss of a loved pet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be open minded while reading this book.
I truely enjoyed "The Animals' Viewpoint on Dying, Death, and Euthanasia" by Elizabeth Severino, D.D., D.R.S, animal communicator.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20 stars
If I could I would rate this book "20 stars".
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. It touches you on both emotional and mental levels. I have to admit that it made me smile, it made me cry, but most importantly, it made me think. Willis tells stories based from an animal's point of view. Most of us don't think about the consequences of our actions - or how little acts of kindness can make a difference to our furry friends. You will laugh on one page and be touched so deeply that you are crying on the next. I recommend this book for both animal lovers and skeptics, both of whom can benefit from the wisdom and heartwarming stories inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's the new James Herriot, this is the new "All Creatures Great and Small"! Buy it, Read it, Give it!!
It is because of this man's writings that I adopted a shelter dog, then started volunteering at a shelter, and then started rescuing animals (not many, but it's a start). I heard other people say that this book changed their lives. When his "How Could You?" was broadcast on a local radio station it STOPPED TRAFFIC! People had to pull over they were crying so hard and the shelter where I volunteer had people coming in to adopt who said they heard it on the radio. My husband and my son read it and blubbered like babies. I print it out from his book's website and distribute it all over the place. Don't be afraid to read the book though because it isn't just sad. Others have called it an emotional rollercoaster ride and that it is. And its a ride you'll never forget. I still reread parts of it and find myself shaking my head in agreement. He gets inside animals heads like no other author and his way with words is as good as or better than James Herriot (who I love dearly!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful animal story
This is the book to buy. What a wonderful book to write about a dog that has been through several struggles and survived.I would read all of her books that she writes.Great reviews....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle that Keeps on Giving
This was a great story about a dog who survived an animal shelter gas chamber and lived to tell about it with the help of Randy Grim. No dog has ever survived the gas chamber in St. Louis, but Quentin did - named after the infamous Sam Quentin.Quentin was one of the millions given up by his guardians, more like sentenced to death by his guardians. If it weren't for Randy Grim's incredible work with the St. Louis Stray Rescue, Quentin would've survived the chamber only to put back in.But that wasn't the case.Randy was called and claimed Quentin, who became a nationwide spokes-dog championing no-kill shelters. Thanks to Randy and Quentin, St. Louis replaced the gas chamber (where animals truly suffered at the end of their lives) in their animal shelters with HUMANE euthanasia.Hopefully some day it will be a no-kill shelter, along with every animal shelter in this country.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great story - book needs work

5-0 out of 5 stars honest and heartbreaking
This is a very brave book. It tells the ugly truth in a compassionate, caring way. The thought that really gets to me me is that this is the account of only one week in one shelter. I agree with another review that mentioned the fact that this book may not reach those that need to read it most. However for all animal lovers it offers, as these lovely ladies mention, the oppurtunity to bear witness to the suffering. To shed tears for those precious animals that lost their lives through no fault of their own. If you love animals read it. It may just spur you into action.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Anyone Wanting a Pet!
This is necessary read for pet owners and those thinking about getting a pet.Although the book is a hard read and I cried through the whole thing, it is a revelation. When I gave one of my cats to a next-door neighbor/friend, I told them if they found they could not keep her for any reason to give her back to me.Instead, after almost a year they decided to just take her to the animal shelter by the time I found out they had closed for the day so I called the next day and found out that she was one of almost 80 cats put to sleep because they just did not have room! This book shows what our pets go through in animal shelters and really should be a required read for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
This book is a great eyeopener on to what really goes on at an animal shelter. I had tears in my eyes the whole time reading about the wonderful cats and dogs that found new homes or unfortunately didn't. It woke me up to how much needs to be done so that no innocent creature goes to the "rainbow bridge" without a chance of ever having a happy home. A great read and I highly recommend it to all animal lovers especially if you are looking for a way that you can help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, well balanced
I started this book with a bit of dread that it would be long and boring, but I found the author's style of writing to be engaging, intellectual, yet readable.I got so many insights from this book it was just amazing to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books (about anything) I have ever read.
This is it.If you've finally admitted to yourself that something is simply not right with a world in which you and your kids can coexist with factory farming and the abuse of whales and other animals that Scully covers, then this is the book to begin with.It is absolutely fascinating, a good read, and it will put meat on the bones of that gnawing feeling you've been having lately.Go with your gut...devestating, and life changing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling, but...
There are several reasons why this book deserves five stars.First and foremost, Matthew Scully presents a fresh perspective on an old issue: the abuse and misuse of animals.Scully successfully navigates between the extremes on either end of the issue by arguing for benevolence towards animals based on the idea of mercy.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on animal liberation
After anyone reads this book they will look at radicals with logic, reason, and a compassionate heart. This book, more then any other animal rights book from Animal Liberation by Singer or The Case for Animal Rights by Regan, stands far above them all. While at the same time all of those books are outstanding and must be read. The anthology approach of gathering many people together to write on an important topic should be done on all critical topics, bravo Best and Nocella. I now know so much more about different viewpoints and a strong stance to debate the use of direct action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Terrorists or Freedom Fighters is a revolutionary conglomeration of individual viewpoints regarding the Animal Liberation Front. The book is not only thorough in its historical coverage, it includes the voices of many individuals, female and male, academics and activists, young and old.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Philosophy Book
With more than 20 authors from around the world, this book examines, theorizes, and professes, an outstanding concept, animal liberation in action. From academics to activists finally a book about the Animal Liberation Front - ALF. The ALF is an international nonviolent underground organization that has been around since 1976. This book should be a recommended read for every environmental and philosophy class. It is well edited and organized. If you enjoy stories, theory, philosophy, animal advocacy, or revolutionary struggles, you must read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I didn't quite know if I was going to make it through this book. Through about the first 8-9 stories, I kept on crying.I was thinking "This is ridiculous. I can't read one doggone story without crying after I read it." I kept thinking of my dog, Shep, who died a couple years ago at the age of 91 and how badly I want another dog. There is a dog beach by my house so usually everytime I see a dog, Shep pops up to mind.I pretty much had sunglasses on when I read this book in public so people wouldn't think I was completely crazy. Somewhere towards the middle, I hardened up and was ready to read this book without blinking a thousand times.
5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and fuzzy
Most of the series of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' has the kind of warm and fuzzy story that many find endearing and sweet. They are not 'deep' most of the time, but do point to things beyond themselves; for my own use, I often find sermon illustrations and stories within the pages of volumes of Chicken Soup -- as chaplain at a retirement centre, many of the stories help people to recall happier times, and help them deal with their present situation.5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and fuzzy

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend reading for intelligent animal lovers
I picked this book up in the gift shop of the San Diego Zoo, one of the few of substance they had. Even for me, a casual, but intelligent zoo visitor, this was worth $30.00. There is much more to animal captivity thanI realized. Every zoo has two sides: the happy, visitor side, and thebusiness/breeding side. Everyone knows about the happy side of a zoo. Thishelps lift the curtain on the other side of animal management and makes meeven more appreciative of the huge expense and efforts of countlessthousands of dedicated people who toil in the background. Articles onanesthesia of large animals, ethics of zoos, breeding, all are informative, basic information that the informed animal lover should know about.Although this is written for other zoo professionals, I recommend it to theaverageAmazon browser who wants to dig a little deeper into life and itsmysteries. Because these are articles from technical journals, they can beread in any order and used as a reference book. There is an excellentbibliography after each chapter, although for the layman it is doubtful ifthey would be read. At any rate, I'm glad I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to human-animal studies
In the Company of Animals is the single best introduction to anthrozoology - the study of human-animal interactions. A woman once told me about her experiencereading it. She said simply, "That book changed my life." Serpell is a both a powerful writer and a leading scholar in this field. The first half of In the Company of Animals is largely concerned with the who, what, and why of maintaining non-human animals as companions. In the breadth of his coverage, Serpell displays an impressive command of psychology, ethology, history, cultural anthropology, and behavioral medicine. A brief sampling of a few representative topics illustrates the span of Serpell's intellectual vision: the role of pets in sixteenth century witchcraft, the effects of watching aquarium fish on blood pressure, bestiality, social parasitism, and why dogs rather than pigs became companion animals. Serpell argues that individuals who keep pets have often been viewed with scorn, suspicion, and pity. At times, pet owners have been subjected to persecution and even death. Thus, this part of the book is essentially a defense of companion animals. Serpell reviews recent studies documenting the benefits of pets to human health, psychological well-being, and the amelioration of loneliness. He concludes that the company of animals serves to buffer their owners from the interpersonal isolation all too common in modern industrial societies.5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to human-animal studies

As a professor of anthropology who teaches a course on Anthrozoology at Western Illinois University, I highly recommend In the Company of Animals. Anthrozoology (the scientific study of human-animal interaction) is a dynamic new area of study and Dr Serpell is one of the founders. This book is required reading for my course, and students love it! Serpell's work explores the phenomena of domestication and pet keeping, or companion animals (as we prefer to call them now), from a cross-cultural and evolutionary perspective that is highly anthropological. Shame on us! An Anthropologist should have written this book! I highly recommend this work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book!
This book is amazing and heart breaking. It is good for anyone, not just animal rights activists or vegetarians. It honestly describes the hell animals go through on a daily basis. I had considered becoming a vegetarian for quite some time, but after reading this book, I knew the time was now. I havent't eaten meat since finishing it. This book tells you of things that the medical, cosmetic, meat and milk industries don't want you to know. Very imformative.
5-0 out of 5 stars You need to read this book.
This book is wracked with so much emotion about the every day suffering of Earth's non-human animals. It talks about factory farming and vivisection labs and suggests cruelty-free alternatives. However, I know there is sadly not much concern or sympathy for the non-human beings on this planet, so I will not go on and on about how I feel regarding animal rights. I will talk more about animal rights as an issue in human terms.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not many books change the world
I read some of the reviews at the start of this page that said how disappointed they were with how lightweight the book seemed to be.I was the opposite.Being at the end of a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, I had come to the conclusion that moral philosophy was a waste of time - just talking about things in the abstract that could never be applied practically.Whenever I'd seen Singer in the media, he had been presented as a very austere utilitarian and I wasn't expecting too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Actions speak louder than words.
In this case though there are actions AND words!! How many times do we not pass a single obviously neglected,,horse in a sandlot and think " Oh how terrible, somebody should do something about that" Well, Melanie and her husband are those somebodies. They actually took that responsibility, that really belongs to all of us horselovers, and changed the lives of a lot of horses and their own in the process.

I had the privilege of meeting Melanie and her niece Sarah not too long ago and was quite impressed with both of them.Melanie has a very unique way of writing her stories and I could not put the book down. After meeting the horses there at Proud Spirit I had to buy the book and see how it all came about. Now after reading that tremendous book, I am anxiously awaiting the next one that is in the making. Now I have to go back and meet the horses that are still there that Melanie wrote about.Anyone who loves horses will LOVE this book.I strongly urge anyone and everyone to read it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Doomsday is coming unless we change
Only 199 pages yet I wanted to underline every word.So many wise assessments on the human race and its avariciousness, stupidity and recklessness during the miniscule time it has occupied planet Earth. The synopsis of John Gray's book is that if we continue with our ego-centric attitude and destructive acts on this planet there will be only one survivor, and it won't be the human race. The planet has its protective mechanism and we will go the way of the dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The enemy of my enemy?
Forget "Mere Christianity". This is the single greatest apologetic work of our time. John Gray ruthlessly demolishes the myth of progress and secular humanism without a religious foundation. Atheists think that they can reject God and the Christian heritage and still find meaning in their lives and the pursuit of truth through science. Think again. Truth, as John Gray argues, is divine. Once you give God up, to be consistent and to avoid cognitive dissonance you have to give up EVERYTHING associated with the idea, including truth, freedom, happiness, love, justice and all the rest. This is what the world looks like without God, folks. Stop fooling yourselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars We cannot make the world to be for us.
It is over a hundred years since Darwin revealed to us our animal lineage, and yet the human primate is still having difficulty coming to terms with its animal origins. All bar creationists may indeed now accept that we are descended from apes, but most of us still cling to the belief that we have somehow become different to the rest of the animal kingdom. Our ability to use language and reason, to see ourselves as selves, selves that move forward in time and, with other selves, progress by building a culture based on moral rules and a technology that seems to give us ever increasing control over our environment.Surely this is enough to set us apart from the rest of nature? No. Thankfully, a British philosopher who lives and breathes today but who speaks with the depth and clarity of a modern day Schopenhauer is here to rid you of this delusion.

Nobody's Horses is a beautifully written, heartwarming story by a cowboy veterinarian dedicated to his Oath. You will feel as though you are there in the midst of American history, danger, excitement and range of emotions experienced by Dr. Hoglund as he sets forth to rescue these magnificent horses. Indeed, Nobody's Horses is a phenomenal story for everyone!

The horse has been a part of the very fabric of our American tradition. There are many who would raise the consciousness of the sorry fate of some of our equine friends.

Dr. Hoglund did a superb job capturing my attention from beginning to end of a fascinating wild horse capture. The personal sacrifice and dedication created a powerful visual of the great care and genuine concern he and others had for the wild horses and foals' safety. An added bonus was the historical references in the development of the west that illustrates the great importance of horses' dramatic influence in the development of our culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very eye opening read
I picked up this book mostly out of curiosity.I was curious about small choices I could make that could make a difference.I went to school and I have a degree in environmental science, but I never applied it in my work.I have always tried to make good informed choices as a consumer. As I feel while I can not change the world, but as a block on informed consumers together we can make kinder choices for our environment.
4-0 out of 5 stars New insight
I have been a vegetarian all my life and have stopped using animal products (tested or material) for a decade or more. And still this book gave me ideas about plenty of more things to do to make my commitment more valuable to earth and me. One of the few 'How to' books that actually gets you started. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming animal and earth friendly in their daily lives. I would also recommend Karen Logan's Clean House, Clean Planet for the people who are specifically looking for eco-friendly non-toxic house keeping tips

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
My roommate bought me a copy of this book and it's really opened my eyes! Although I've been vegan for several years I didn't realize how much more I could be doing to help the world around me by making smarter choices. It's not only inspiring but a great resource book as well. ... Read more
