5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...A Great Coffee Table Book for Any Firearms History Buff
Just the pictures in this huge volume are enough to make it worth thumbing through, but the written information is tremendous and the author manages to cover all connections to Winchesters' Fathers, including John M Browning, my personal hero (other than my Father, Uncle, Grandfather and all other veterans of WWII and Korea).Probably not all the information on Winchester firearms and ammo history but all that I can absorb and still have a social life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy
Beautiful to look at. Not heavy in the way of company or technical history, but what a great coffee table book. Costly - if you can find it - but wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book all aquatic chemists should keep on reading
Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No
This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems
This book is an excellent reference. It presents a thorough discussion ofa complex topic. The authors provide many worked examples, with allrequired numeric inputs and resutls, that permit the reader to quicklyverify his or her understanding of the material. The consistent and properuse of units throughout the book is refreshing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy and Complete
Definitely a very good reference guide for any freshwater enthusiast. The mini-atlas has every freshwater species beautifully diplayed in color photo. Under each color photo is a group of symbols. These symbols are defined in the book itself. The symbols convey what water conditions are appropriate, size of tank, food, swimming level, breeding type and level of aggression. The mini-atlas also has separate chapters on breeding, fish diseases, aquarium plants and tank set-up.
1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment.
From the reviews, I expected alot from this book. I know that it is old, but I was really disappointed. The information is not consistent and incomplete. Here are my issues:
5-0 out of 5 stars Occasionally difficult, but a great reference
Need to know if a certain breed of unusual fish is compatible with, say, your angelfish?Dr. Axelrod knows. This atlas is amazing in it's depth for a "mini-atlas," with page after page of freshwater fish. And then he gets into the real meat of fishkeeping after that!Although it can occasionally be difficult to use (the fish are listed by their scientific name in general, not their common name, which can make looking up a certain fish difficult), all in all this is an incredible book, and one every fishkeeper should have on their bookshelf. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sagan's Bible:The Book that got People thinking about the Good Earth.
This was the 20th century's greatest story-book on us,the citizens of the planet Earth.I first read this in grade school and was spellbound, by Sagan's magickal review of the human race and the universe. No other book equalled it's eloquence, expressing to all readers, the need to save our species ,the planet and all her creatures. -(Reader Beware!)-One thing that is largely left out is ,Realpolitik.Sagan was an "ivory tower scientist" and also an "arm-chair atheist".Political Reality and Spirituality, can not be removed from our human society and our human pysche. Yet,by writing this momentous book,he remains a "true literary emissary for positive social change". It would't hurt the masses of readers,by continuing to explore this book, now into the 21 century .

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous reviewer missed the point entirely
This book is not about the scientific accuracy of Sagan's predictions and musings. If Sagan wanted to be purely scientific, this book wouldn't have been written. The fact is that we don't KNOW enough about what's out there to make scientific predictions. What we do have is our imagination, and our knowledge of how the universe works. Sagan does an excellent job of using his imagination to come up with different possibilities for us to ponder. He speculates about which might be more likely, but he doesn't claim scientific accuracy. This book will expand your mind and give you a mature outlook on the world and our place in the universe.

3-0 out of 5 stars A testament to Carl Sagan's convictions
As the years go by, this book ceases to be an up-to-date popularization of astronomy, and more of a testament to Carl Sagan's convictions and optimism with science. As a youth, was enchanted by the series, and grateful for the important principles and fact about science was being taught. We need scientists; we need to popularize science; we need to do all of this necessary hard research that raises our standard of living.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it.
An excellent book. My son loves it. He has the other 3-4 books that has been written by Jane Yolen and falls within the same dinosaur theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars If your kids like dinosaurs...
I love this book. It is a book that my 2 year old is interested in while I am slipping some numbers education in. Besides the fact that it has dinosaurs...

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun for Your Little Dinosaur
HOW DO DINOSAURS COUNT TO TEN not only provides a way for very young children to learn to count. It also feeds into the way a kid thinks. The various dinosaurs who do the counting have human mons who cheer them on to learn.Kids will identify with the concept.A child can be a dinosaur today, and his Mom can be a person. Also Mom stays in the background making the dinosaur/child the center of attention, providing a supportive 'I can do it myself' climate. While cartoonish and playful, the pictures represent dinosaurs accurately enough to recognize them. T. Rex helps with the counting, as does Ptaradactyl, and a few others I can't spell or pronounce. But as I've learned from my 5 year-old-neighbor, the kids should be have no trouble informing the adults in their lives which dion is who.As the dinosaurs count, they play with the toys they are counting, which adds to the fun.The books themselves are sturdy and will withstand rough handling by really little tykes. They're also a convenient size for toddlers to hold.Anybody who has a junior dinosaur fan around the house should look at HOW DO DIONSAURS COUNT TO TEN. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The lovely Reed
This is clearly the best of the current crop of rod building books. It could do with an index (ther isn't one!), updates on components (The Golden Witch, Bellingers - he carries **everything**, not just reel seats), and additional information on critical processes (straightening glued up rods, filing, scraping, sanding a blank, wrapping, etc.). Overall, though, if you are going to build a first rod this ought to be your first purchase!

4-0 out of 5 stars The most current book on bamboo rod making
Bamboo rod making is one of those crafts with enough twists in the road that most first-timers want as much up-to-date information as they can get before they start. The Lovely Reed ("LR") is both possibly the best single reference on the subject, and the most generally useful book if you are only reading one.4-0 out of 5 stars The modern Bibel for Rodmakers after Garisson
Well, Howelss Book is a must for todays Rodmakers and all lovers of the split cane rods! Shue, he tells not much new in the craftmanship of bamboo rodbuilding, but he shows ( a lot of photos)a simple way to build your own rod. He`s way is noth much another than Garrison describe, but Howells Way is a synthese of old and new formulas! Exelent written and have also a look at his informative taper-section! Better buy the book now - most better books about the rodbuilding are fast out of print! Mabye Howell created the new rodmakers bible?!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars buy it and use it
Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible resource of "oldtimer" wisdom
I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).
5-0 out of 5 stars Fueled by moonshine
In 1980 I was a freshman in college with a part time job that paid $3.50 an hour.My car at the time was a 1973 Plymouth station wagon that got 12 mpg on a good day.Downhill.With a tail wind.Because fuel costs were eating up a good part of my check, I began to explore the possibilities of fueling the car with alternative fuels, mainly moonshine. The Foxfire books were one of the sources that I turned to in an effort to learn about the process.Needless to say, I never got around to building my still, but my interest in the tradition of oral history was fired in a big way.I picked up the rest of the set over the next few years and was fascinated by them all.The Foxfire books are the ultimate "how it used to be" source.Highly recommended. ... I like the selection of songs that are avaliable. They are well recorded and there duration is fine.
5-0 out of 5 stars Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs
Given the tendency of birds to generally move about rapidly (much more so than plants!), I find that being able to identify their song is often more of an effective key to positive identification than is sight recognition. Sound familiar? And do you live in western North America? If so, you might find this CD set of bird songs a valuable tool. I do. I especially like the length of the samples that are provided for each species. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
A few years ago I purchased "Birding By Ear" by Richard Walton & Robert Lawson. It's good, but I was disappointed by the small number of species represented (my version has 90 birds on three CD's, though Amazon's current offering appears to be abridged onto one CD).Each track has detailed verbal descriptions of the songs, and disc 3 includes some practice mixes of different habitats so you can test yourself.I think it would make a good tutorial for someone just getting started in listening to bird songs. But for me "Birding By Ear" didn't work. The detailed verbal descriptions got in the way of listening to the songs.I wanted more birds and fewer words.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Train yourself and train your dog
After reading the first few chapters of this great book I tried one of the simplest techniques and it worked! The book is well written and easy to understand. The author makes his training points by mingling the training method with interesting stories of problem dogs that have been corrected.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
We have implemented just a couple of the suggestions so far and have already seen improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars It just makes sense!
This is THE book for training your dog in my opinion. We have a very stubborn Beagle puppy who was showing many signs of thinking she was the alpha dog. After reading this book and applying the simple principles we have a changed dog! She is calm and responsive. We were at our wit's end and our obedience trainer recommended this book and it has been fabulous. I would recommend reading this book before you ever put a foot in a breeder's kennel. It will help you so much. It does work for older dogs too, so if nothing else has worked...try this book! This woman is a genius. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars statsitical genetics
There are many basic errors in statistics in this book, such as the concepts of expected value and degrees of freedom. The statistical background of the author should be very weak. From the bibliography (how many publications does the author have?) we can see whether the author is well prepared to write this kind of book.Did Dr. Ron Sederoff who wrote the foreword read the book thoroughly? If so, he should have pointed out those very obvious errors. Of course, Dr. Sederoff should not be responsible for those errors if he has no background in Statistics. I hope the author can check the book thoroughly before it goes to the fourth printing or just withdraw it from the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful job
The author of this book defines genomics as the study of whole genomes via the integration of cytology, Mendelian-quantitative-population-molecular genetics with bioinformatics and automated sequencing. It attempts to answer, the author states, such questions as to the physical and chemical requirements of genomes, the possible necessity that genes be located at certain sites to function normally, that particular DNA sequences and structures needed for gene functions, the total number of functional genes necessary for a biological system, and the homology between the DNA sequences of different species. He addresses the book to biologists interested in statistical issues in genomics, for mathematicians in genomics, and for students of genetics. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in Molecular Quantitative Genetics
The book discuses quantitative and population genetics on the bases of molecular level. It is very useful for genetic analysis across many disciplines, including plant and animal breeding, and human genetics. It provides useful explanations of some complex biometrical concepts. ... Read more

Cherry Hill has done it again. Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage is a must- have for all horse owners. It includes grooming tips, a barn-care schedule, and even a suggested layout for your farm! It also includes tips on choosing land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scratches that itch
Ms. Hill has written a book that fits in well with the psyches of horse-lovers--those who may have just one horse, a herd or stableful, or know that someday they will be a horseowner. It's a book to inspire, inform, encourage, and gently correct when necessary.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Save your money.Spend time with your horse.Go to an actual clinic or trainer if you can afford it.Parelli's writing is difficult. The concepts are difficult to understand and there is little practical or useful information.Horses are fairly simple.Parelli makes it sound exotic. It's not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Man and horse unite
I would recommend or even make it mandatory for everyone even thinking of going near a horse to read this book. Pat Parelli gets it from the horses point of view, and makes it easy for us to get it too. I have a 2, 3 and 4 yr horse. I have worked with all of them utilizing the theories presented in this book. I have also bought his partnership level 1 and the tools to go with it. It works, my horses are responsive and a joy to be with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Popular but expensive and often unsafe
Mr Parelli writes in a self-opinionated, pompous style about horses, trying to give the impression that he is the guru of all things equine. While his methods have undoubtedly enabled a large number of people to improve their relationship with their horse, one must remember that there are untold millions who have a wonderful relationship with their horse which owes nothing to either his expensively-marketed system or the costly, cutely-named gadgets which seem to be an integral part of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on bird behaivor I've seen
Without stepping up to a college textbook on Ornithology, this has been the best book I've found generally availible to the public on bird behaivor. David Allen Sibley is an authority on the subject and that's good enough for me. The college textbooks are a bit dry and uninteresting, however this book is anything but. A perfect companion to his other books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of a non-birder...
I'm not a birder, though it seems like an interesting hobby. But I just look at the birds at the feeders and birdbath in the back yard and think, "I wonder what that one is?"So, I bought "The Sibley Guide to Birds" (which is outstanding) on the recommendation of a birder friend, and that led me to this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Sibley Guide to Bird Life & Behavior

4-0 out of 5 stars The Safari Companion
Excellent safari companion showing various animals and describing them, their habitat, etc.Recommended for anyone going on safari.

5-0 out of 5 stars African animal sighting tips your mother never told you and your father didn't know
This is a book of biblic quality for the uninitiated.I did not appreciate the diversity of the wildlife available in Kenya and Tanzania.Wow, this is worthwhile study guide as a prologue to your journey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not find it that useful in E. Africa
The pictures are black and white drawings. We brought this and the Audubon Society Guide to African Wildlife (or something like that) and we much preferred the Audubon book.It was more compact, had a durable vinyl cover and had color pictures with quick facts on each animal - which is really what you want in the moment on a bumpy safari game drive.I would get the other book instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books!
This book is very well structured, has wonderful illustrations, pictures, and diagrams.I agree that it is an excellent introductory biology text asit touches base with all facets of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars just excellent
"Biology: The Science of Life" is an extremely valuable guide to a thorough and complete understanding of basic biological concepts. In AP Bio, it not only helped me through the class, but caused me to permanently fall in love with biology. I'd love to meet the authors to thank them in person for this wonderful book. I'll buy it, because it will always offer me a connection to my first, playful, yet professional encounter with biology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good...too good....
As a fellow bio student to others I have but only one thing to say, Give me a break!! Do you know how long the book is ?!?!? And do you know how thick this book is?? If you are in AP bio, youhave to know every single page by heart ! Ok, honestly, thisbook is good and probably the best AP bio book there is,just be sure to read this book over the summer to get theinformation. One test is 60 pages of text in this book. The book is also very comprehensive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is amazing. I'm new to green building and reading this book gave me so much information on so many different things. I want to find other books like this!

4-0 out of 5 stars A+ Informative jumping off point for people interested in environmental and social responsibility.
I didn't read it cover to cover but it was not the type of book to be read like that. All in all I'd say it does a good job covering what is a pretty broad topic; there are so many "green" strategies out there and it is hard to discuss them all.I thought it did a good job on the three or so different main categories and it connected them back to the common denominator.Save, protect, and preserve natural resources. It covers site and land usage, energy and water conservation, and interior and exterior material usage. The author took the difficult path of trying to sell `green' building as potentially cost effective, whereas in reality I think it is important to realize that capital costs will definitely be higher and it is hard to predict/confirm short term viable pay-backs.Once you put a value on your conscience and the long term big picture it makes obvious sense, reasonable pay-backs are definitely attainable but they come from diligent work and coordinated evaluation and integration.
5-0 out of 5 stars A WEALTH OF INSPIRATION AND INFORMATION
IT'S GREAT TO HAVE A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ON GREEN BUILDING
