4-0 out of 5 stars Endearing Ocean Story
What an endearing story about the ocean. As an avid SCUBA diver, I loved the idea of a baby whale following a swimmer along the coast because it lost its mother.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone
This is a great book.Easy to read and it paints a beautiful story of one woman's experience.I could not put it down and wanted to read the end first to see what happened.I passed it on to my husband, 11 year old son and 14 year old daughter. It is a nice book with a nice story. Not too many of those books out there now. Will make a great gift for anyone who loves to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take a pass on this one
The idea behind this book was a good one and the reason that I purchased it in the first place. The opportunity to swim with a baby whale in the wild is something many of us only dream about, yet Ms. Cox got to experience it firsthand and it makes sense that she would want to share that story.Unfortunately, this book does not get the job done.It is so poorly written that I had to force myself to keep turning the pages.I kept hoping that maybe I just needed to get used to her writing style, but there is no style... it's just written badly. The narration is often choppy, the paragraphs don't flow, and much of the detail about the ocean seems a bit over the top.As one other reviewer put it, it's as if every detail of her every swim in the ocean was combined into that one day.Not very realistic. If you are going to enjoy this book at all, perhaps a little suspension of disbelief is in order.Whole sections are just plain boring, and to add insult to injury, the illustration on the front of the book is not that of a gray whale (the species that Cox swims with in the book). It's a sperm whale.A small thing, yes, and a decision made probably more for marketing purposes than out of ignorance, but it still serves to make the overall package even less honest or appealing. After plodding through about half the book, I finally quit and returned it for a full refund.Save your money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An antidote to muddled thinking
Ortega y Gasset brings philosophical rigor and logic to the consideration of hunting. In a powerful counterblast to muddled, emotion-driven, anthropomorphic, confused, sentimental arguments - one can't call them "ideas" - OyG clarifies the core questions and quandaries, and gives a sound philosophical foundation for the defense - indeed, the celebration -of the hunting imperative that 21st century urban man sublimates or ignores at his environmental and spiritual peril.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute necessity for the animal rights debate.
Ortega delves into the art of hunting, and gets to the root of the matter. Both the nature of human, and of animal are examined. Be forewarned, this is heavy duty philosophy, not just an article on where to hang a tree stand. Ortega wrote in the early twentieth century, and so some will think his ideas are dated, and that we know much better now. This gives rise to the thought that humans change rapidly. Ortega's work stands because we do not substantially change over just a hundred or even a thousand years. This is why Shakespear and the Bible are still applicable, and why Ortega's Meditations On Hunting still stands. The act of hunting has changed over the centuries, to evolve into sport. Ortega delves into this also, and his answer to our inner questions, and the current questions of animal rightists is so clear and distilled that it shines in one's brain. It is rare to find one so clear in academia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Mind and Eye-opening book
Just like the author, I've always been fascinated by clouds. I find myself constantly looking up at them. I don't know about other people, but they seem just as beautiful as they always have, even the ones that will pour down. When people come across new knowledge, it usually comes with new appreciation.
5-0 out of 5 stars More Heads in the Clouds, Please
"Blue skies, smiling at me," goes the Irving Berlin song, "Nothing but blue skies do I see."Berlin thought that was a good thing, but Gavin Pretor-Pinney would not.For him, clouds are there to be enjoyed, and they make that blue more beautiful by its being in the background. He does not feel there is anything depressing about having "a cloud on the horizon" and he sees no reason that we should link clouds with catastrophe, as in "clouds of doom", or with ill-will as in "clouds of suspicion".He feels clouds are underappreciated, and so a couple of years ago, he founded the Cloud Appreciation Society, complete with badges. As he says, "Of course, an organization only exists when it has a website," and indeed the CAS has one, full of photographs and poems by members, a picture of the Cloud of the Month, and chat rooms, with this stated purpose: "If you've got something to tell us, we'd love to hear it. But only if it is about clouds. Otherwise we're not interested."Pretor-Pinney would like us all to be cloudspotters, and has produced _The Cloudspotter's Guide: The Science, History, and Culture of Clouds_ (Perigee), a witty and informative volume for those who want to take an educated view of his favorite subject. He emphatically agrees with John Constable, who could paint clouds like no one else: "We see nothing truly until we understand it."The book cannot fail in its mission of increasing both understanding and seeing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Cloud-lovers delight
This is a terrific book for anyone who likes clouds, the sky -- the outdoors, really. It's a delightful, readable combination of basic information (on cloud types, for example) and interesting, cloud- and weather-related anectdotes and stories. The humor can be corny, but there is plenty of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kid's Review
I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.
5-0 out of 5 stars Autism Spectrum lifesaver..
.. and should be listed as such.My daughter loves this book, she is very intent as we read it, which means she is taking it in.She has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which is a high-functioning form of autism. These kids have difficulty with social situations, and they are visual learners, so this is awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars great for girls
With caddiness starting at even earlier ages these days, I bought this book to help my 6 year old daughter understand that not everyone demostrates good friendship. She's so sensitive and doesn't understand why others don't respect her feelings. This book reiterates how to be a good friend and how not to be. It praises being kind and caring so it reinforced what she knew to be correct behavior. The illustrations she recognized immediately to be Marc Brown's adorable and colorful characters. I highly recommend this to any child who's learning to deal with bullies and pushy kids in school. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding guide to natural history and identification!
I can only echo Piotr Naskrecki's review. When this book arrived my first thought was "Wow! This is the insect book I've been waiting for!" The illustrated flowchart keys to insect orders and families are outstanding and will be more easily used than the conventional keys in standard texts. I've been interested in insects most of my life (over 50 years) and this is the most incredible introduction to the subject I've seen. The only quibble I have is that the butterflies and moths don't have an illustrated flow chart key to their families. But don't let that keep you from getting this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last!
At last we receive a well-written, comprehensive, and gorgeously illustrated guide to insects of eastern North America, a book that has been badly needed for many, many years. Stephen Marshall did a splendid job of combining in a single volume information on biology and identification of most families of insects found in this region, and did it in a way that is both pleasing to the eye, and truly educational. Lavishly illustrated with literally thousands of color photos, this book is an encyclopedia of North American insects, and a fantastic invitation to the exploration of our insect fauna. It includes overviews of all orders of insects found in N. America, and provides user-friendly flowchart keys to their identification (down to the family level) that are short on technical jargon but rich in illustrations. The book also has chapters on collecting and photographing insects and other small critters. I am sure that this volume will influence many budding naturalists, and quickly become the resource of choice for entomology teachers and students. An absolute must in the library of anybody with an interest in natural history as well as a useful reference for gardeners. I simply cannot recommend it enough. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The indispensible Tropical Pacific field guide.
Pratt, Bruner, and Dickinson have produced a superb field guide completely covering all the islands of the tropical Pacific from Hawai'i west through Micronesia. This is a true field guide:it gives the field marks of everyspecies, notes problems in identification with special emphasis ondistinguishing similar species, and wastes no space on matters not relatedto identification.(The exception is that Pratt, a significantornithologist as well as an expert in identification, summarizescontroversies in classification whre appropriate.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The perfect book for the novice marine aquarium enthusiast.Step by step it tells you how to set up a number of salt water aquariums both small and large with alternative methods of filtration. It also covers which fish do well for the beginner and how they get along with each other. The writing is clear and concise, and when I finished reading and got started with my first tank, there wasn't a single thing I encountered that wasn't covered in the book.Great start for your first tank.Pick this one up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating the elephant in the room one bite at a time.
This is a super little book that will have a huge impact on you and your organization! By following the simple steps outlined in this book you will be able to discuss the undiscussables, identify the unidentifyable, and make progress collectively like you never dreamed was possible. Another very helpful tool for your leadership toolbox!

5-0 out of 5 stars Packs powerful insights for organizational change!
The authors examine the idea that major problems are often not 'discussable,' although they are talked about in a destructive manner, and remain implicit. The consultant should help surface these "elephants" in a constructive dialogue, and push forward to making decisions, determining what are the next steps, and following through. This practical book provides guidelines to show how to achieve organizational change by learning to name "elephants" and take action. High Reliability Organizations, which reward people for pointing out any deviations from the expected, are discussed. The style of leadership needed to achieve change through getting people to open up and constructively participate in problem solving, is explored. This thin book is both broad and deep, and proves highly informative and thought provoking. It packs powerful insights for organizational change!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hubris Arrogance and Screamers
This book is right on target whether you are working with a company or with a non-for-profit. I found myself continually underlining relevant ideas.Hammond puts concepts we already know but tend to hide in the back of our minds in simple language that reminds us of how important it is to look at assumptions, accountability and involvement at all levels. She forces us to look at the consequences of speaking up vs not speaking up.I am an advocate (although after reading Hammond's book I am thinking of choosing a word that is less win-lose) of appreciative inquiry methods and also using public involvement in decision making processes and this book is in perfect alignment with both areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AMajor Contribution to the Scientific World
Caterpillars of Eastern North America is WONDERFUL. I use it all the time. It is my major resource for caterpillar statistics and photos. I rear, photograph and research moth and butterfly adults, larvae and food plants, so this book is a great tool. It is long overdue. I know, because, as a kid, there were no books on the subject and most people thought the only good caterpillar was a dead one. Oh, how I would have appreciated this book back in the 40s. THANK YOU to David Wagner and Princeton University Press for taking on this major contribution to the scientific community.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE caterpillar book to own!
I echo all of the favorable comments in the other reviews. This book has the best photos I've seen in any field guide of any kind.Shows not only the caterpillar but the resulting butterfly or moth - and, so, can also be helpful with moth identification due to the dearth of other publications on moths. This book covers a wide spectrum of caterpillars and should make it easy for anyone to identify them.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a Guide that Includes Moth Caterpillars!
Moth caterpillars are more numerous (moth species outnumber butterfly species 10 to one), but books to help you identify these are rare to say the least, and most of those that do cover moths as well as butterflies are both very technical and expensive."Caterpillars of Eastern North America: A Guide to Identification and Natural History" fills the need (for the eastern part of the continent at least) for a reasonably comprehensive guide to both moth and butterfly larvae, with the moths not shortchanged. It can be helpful to a degree in the west as well, but I hope a western guide will soon grace the book stores. We still have no Peterson guide to western moths to match the eastern one!

The practical information, illustrations and practice tips in this volume will certainly raise your shooting ability to the next level.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware.
While this book offers many sound trapshooting points, they come amidst a sea of personal opinion, Christian evangelizing, and the marketing of other books. This book is self-published and begs for professional editing. There are countless glowing spelling and grammatical errors. If one were to eliminate the redundancy and material not related to the subject, this rather expensive book would barely reach 100 pages. And, as if the contents were all his original ideas, he offers no bibliographic reference for any of the opinions, facts, or conclusions, even though many are contrary to conventional trapshooting wisdom and instruction. While Russell is quick to point out that the book is only useful if kept constantly on hand during practice and competition, he also sells it as an e-book that cannot be printed. All things considered, I have to seriously question the accuracy of the material and the validity of Mr. Russell's opinions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Visionary - Uncompromising - Accessible
Simply put, this book serves up excellent insights into the only future of architecture and the hope for our injured environment... sustainable design. McLennan is more than an author or advocate... he is a deep green thinker who practices on a daily basis what he preaches. Of the many great books available on this subject I found this one the most comprehensive. The Philosophy of Sustainable Design encompassing not only the materials, technologies, and methods available to green designers but it highlights the leaders, champions and innovators who are driving the green building movement forward. This book offers information (and inspiration) for the seasoned and the novice. Read it, share it and read it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Green Warrior

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Natural Capitalism
This book is the new heavyweight contender of green building titles. If you liked Natural Capitalism by Hawkins and Lovins, you'll enjoy this book. It's more comprehensive and uses facts and figures more judiciously. I'm impressed with the author's courage to make predictions in a chapter on the future of sustainability. This book should be required reading for all architecture students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars (young) Man V. Dinosaur (who bakes with aplomb)
It would take a human being with the sense of humor of a bowl of moldy tapioca not to find "Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct" one of the funniest picture books of the year.I mean, I resisted reviewing it.Mo Willems needs no introduction any longer. His misleadingly simple style is what it is, as it is, as it shall be evermore.Basically, he does not need my help promoting his books. That doesn't mean, though, that it's not fun to do.Now the man in question has tried his hand on the standard large-animal-who's-friends-with-kids genre. You can keep you Cliffords and your Dannys with their dinosaurs, though.Color me an Edwina fan through and through (and that goes double for her chocolate chip cookies).
4-0 out of 5 stars Everybody loves Edwina...
Everybody in town loves Edwina, the dinosaur. And why wouldn't they? She's helpful and charming and winsome and makes great chocolate chip cookies. But smarty-pants Reginald von Hoobie-Doobie is very irritated that nobody -- least of all Edwina herself -- realizes that dinosaurs are extinct. And so he sets out to disprove Edwina's existence. While this book isn't as silly as the Pigeon series or Knuffle Bunny, "Edwina" is a solid read-aloud that will be enjoyed by children ages 4-6. And adults will appreciate the subtle humor in Willem's illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Mo Willems!
As always Willems is amazing!I haven't read a book of his yet that has dissapointed me, there is always humour and a certain degree of whimsy to his books. Here the story is about one boy who is determined to convince the rest of the world that their beloved Edwina the Dinosaur is supposed to be extinct.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Entomology
Dr. Pedigo's book is one of the better general entomology/ pest management textbooks that I have read. It is written in an understandable format and provides a good introduction to the structure, function, taxonomy, and applied ecology of insects. This volume is most appropriate for the undergraduate student interested in entomology although it would also be a handy addition to a graduate student's library as well. As with many introductory entomology textbooks, the taxonomic keys are very limited. I would recommend Borror, Triplehorn, and Johnson's: An introduction to the study of insects to anyone who desires a book with a good set of taxonomic keys. ... Read more
