Great Book
This is a great book, considering how huge it is. Being written in 1998, this book has all the current knowledge. There's more info on the actual era and the technical asspects of dinosaurs than the actual dinosaurs. Despite the price, this book is worth it.

Great book, but so little about donkeys...
Received a signed copy (nice surprise!) of the book which I found to be well written, illustrated and quite complete, information-wise.The only comment I can make is that I thought that there would be more specific information on donkey training than there currently is.While the author's Little Jack Horner tends to prove that whatever a mule can do, so can a donkey, I wonder whether the training described for mules in this book is also applicable as is to donkeys. Boy was I mistaken
I ordered the book....then read the reviews and wanted to cancel....I received it and am I glad....it is the greatest thing going for training donkeys! I own 2...I know.....those who did not like the book simply don't understand longears. Rip-off
This is absolute offal. Not only is it a rip-off of a GOOD idea, it's not even a good rip-off.
Cute, but not funny.
I bought this and Bad Cats the other day, and I have to say Bad Cats was far better. Bad Dogs is cute, but a little stupid. Almost all of the photos are dogs wearing costumes. Bad Dogs? No, Bad OWNERS. Get Bad Cats instead.

Good Book!!!
First of all I have to say the book is defiently worth the money. It dosent have a ton of funny parts but the parts it does have are enough to make you and/or a friend crack up. The only problems are that it dosent have many hilarious pages and its not as good as bad cat. Shaw's "Closeups in Nature"
"Closeups in Nature has provided a good technical approach to closeup photography, especially for the amateur photographer. I was in need of information relative to lense specifications and technical data to try and sucessfully photograph some difficult subject for publication. THis book gave some very generic insight on how to start that photo process and some guidance on how to develope a personal technique.

Classic.. but needs revision
This is an excellent book.. if you still use equipment that you have purchase during early 80's.Although the same photographic principles apply, this book can definitely benefit from some major revisions.

Very Good Book
This book is very good for Beginners to Intermediate Level Photo Enthusiasts. It has couple of tips and examples which the reader has to grasp and note down till they start using it and make familiar with it. The best book our African guides have seen!
We have used the Field Guide to African Wildlife on three safaris to Southern and Eastern Africa. This guide is so wonderful (especially the photos) that on two of these trips, our guides (in Rwanda and Namibia) have been so fascinated with it that we have given it to them at the end of our safari. This will be the third copy of the book I have bought!

Buy this book if you're only buying one!
We received the Field Guide the day before we departed for a photo safari to Tanzania and Kenya. It proved to be an invaluable quick reference guide to wildlife we saw during the day, as well as an encyclopedic work on each species, including countries where they're found, coloration, mating habits, foods, and myriad other details. You can take a cursury view of an animal or a deep dive into each one. I recommend spending a little time learning the cross-referencing system to get the most out of the book. Don't wait to buy it in Africa, as it costs 3x as much there!

I bought this book after my first trip to Kenya and Masai Mara. I took it with us on our recent trip back to the same area. We had a wonderful guide who had a guide book for East African animals. This is the fourth, long awaited, edition of Fishes of the World.

A theory
First of all the subtitle has been wrongly interpreted.Some creationists have decided to use this title to expose Darwin as a racists.He may be, I have not read "The Descent of Man" yet.The origin of species talks very little of man.It is a book of observations and study.It concentrates on how plant life, has by selection, brought forth all the species we see today.The survival of the fittest through millions of years by gradual change.Darwin covers his beloved pigeons in depth.I agree with him that all the different types of pigeons we see today probably came from one ancestor of the pigeon.This is called variation of kind.We see this in just about every living creature and flora.The problem arises when the next step is taken, the rise of one species turning into another (reptile to bird).Throughout the book Darwin does admit to this fact, but he still maintains that it must be, with much difficulty.

Great book for understanding site occupancy modeling
I think this is a pretty good book.It is the only reference on this relatively new type of patch occupancy modeling.It is mainly focused on the models of MacKenzie et al. and the Royle and Nichols model.This is a great place to start if you know nothing about this method or a good reference for advanced users.

Irresistable birds, fascinating trivia, interesting science
Fascinating book. The sheer amount of literary and artistic references the authors bring in serve to show the importance of crows to our culture. The epigraph is a Robert Frost poem, "Dust of Snow."

Crows and ravens have always lived with me and I with them. As an only child who grew up among adult human relatives, I may have had more "socialization" training from crows than from my own human family. About the only thing the crows didn't teach me was how to knit. (I learned that from my father who swore me to secrecy!) What I know now is that if the crows saw any need for sweaters, they'd have taught me that too.

Pollan is my hero!
I am a pharmacist who is also very interested in how diet and exercise maintain people's health.Michael Pollan's book was an incredible eye-opener.I first heard him interviewed on Science Friday on NPR news (podcast) and decided to read his book.It is an extremely well researched book with an entire source list in the back.It is also very entertaining and easy to read.It is obvious he has a great sense of humor.His book encompasses the economics, politics, biology, ecology, and physiology regarding our current american diet.His book has surely changed the way I think about food and I was fairly well versed before I read his book.Now, I am a member of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and have been spreading the word! This is one of the best and most influential books I have ever read. Everyone should read it.Ignorance is not bliss.Just ask some of my pharmacy customers who have side effects from the medicines they take and have to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on those same medications.

My response to Vegan/Vegetarian horn-tutors
I'm about halfway through this book (I've been kind of skipping around to various parts--which is how I usually read non-fiction books). Modern agriculture, factory farming, and where our food comes from are all subjects near and dear to my heart. These are topics that only people in the industry or professionally trained chefs (which I am) usually know and care about. I don't think veganism/vegetarianism is a good response (and I don't think it will fix anything). Instead, we need to be voicing our displeasure with our dollars.
