5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the serious, passionate woodlot owner.
Having bought a woodlot in the past year, I praise this book based on real-life experience. This book is an excellent introduction to the forestry terms and practice. I learned all the background I needed to understand a forest management plan and discuss it intelligently with a professional forester. This book discusses forestry issues in detail, but without getting bogged down in arcane minutiae.4-0 out of 5 stars The practical issues of woodlot management
This book is a basic introduction to woodlot management with a focus on the forest ecosystem, basic valuation metrics for trees, and tax and other financial concerns associated with selling your trees. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to forestry for the private landowner

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond political agendas and judgmental shame tactics: just simple talk about living well in America.
There's some rubbish going around that there are two rigidly defined, black-and-white categories of people in the USA: conservative Republicans who don't care about the environment, and Al Gore's superforce of environmental enthusiasts. Or, if you prefer, blissfully ignorant normal people vs. crazy green hippie radicals. As a moderate who likes anybody whose category can't be rhymed with 'glass bowl', I dislike any either/or mindset. It's not the reasonable people who gain media attention, it's the radicals, and they become the stereotype of what we should avoid. In this vein, the absolute worst threat to the environment today is, ironically, the most passionate of environmentalists, whose self-righteous smugness and brimstone rants turn off the average reasonable person, understandably dismissing such vile attitudes. As with religion, environmental consciousness brings the stigma of personal manipulation via shame--for there are, no question, those who try to induce and exploit guilt for a hidden personal gain. The majority recognizes such 'activism' for what it is--at its worst, the pleasure of feeling superior to the 'unenlightened masses', labelled lazy, stupid, ignorant, blind, etc. simply for living in the world as it is. Those radical environmentalists who truly care at heart must see others from an empathic viewpoint, one which doesn't include heavy-handedness or bitter judgment, and thus has a chance of actually convincing others. This is the age of the new environmentalist--common people who come together for a cause that transcends political platforms, because regardless of our personal differences, we all want the same thing: a better life for us all. And you can bet that politicians across the board will need to listen. We are the voters, we have the power here, and we can encourage each other to use it in ways that benefit our country and our families.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of "living green"
I'm not a die-hard eco-liver, but I like to be good to the environment where I can. This book gave a lot of good ideas for just that.I also bought "Green Living" by The E Magazine at the same time. This one was better. It kept my interest and wasn't just a collection of fact and figures.
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy a copy for your local library
The book may not have all that much to offer to those of us walking the talk environmentally, but it has great value as a book to give as a gift to someone who could use some wisdom and can do attitude as far as being materialistic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some perspective on the global climate
Doug Macdougall's "Frozen Earth" is clear, easy-to-read popular science for those interested in changes in global climate but without the scientific background to understand the often emotionally-charged discussion in the public media.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Summer Book
Frozen Earth by Doug Macdougall is a fascinating book and it makes a great summer read as the heat beat downs and one tries to remember that we are in an ice age, albeit an interglacial period. The history of the discovery is told for all its glory and each chapter highlights a different personality related to the realization that the world has been through, and will continue to go through, a series of ice ages. The science is explained very neatly and the story is driven by the series of discoveries, beginning with Louis Agassiz to the very latest scientific discoveries, including alternate theories. The author also brings the story forward. All in all, a fascinating glimpse into our world, past, present, and future.Ice is a nice thing to think about on a hot summer day and this is just the book to get one truly thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating account of ice ages and how they were discovered
This is an absolutely fascinating account of the various ice ages that have periodically taken over the earth. From the ancient "Snowball Earth" (sometimes called "Slushball Earth," 550 to 850 million years ago) in which the entire planet was more or less frozen from pole to pole, to the "Younger Dryas," a cold spell beginning 12,800 years ago and lasting for about 1,200 years, to"Little Ice Age" in Europe (700 to 150 years ago) to the "year without a summer," in 1816, UCSD Professor of Earth Sciences Doug MacDougall chronicles the ebb and flow of glacial advance and retreat in a most interesting and informative manner.

World Agriculture and Environment in my opinion is a very interestig book, in which you can find, besides the basic information of agricultural production, techniques that help to reduce damage to natural systems, and also this book gives important evaluations of modern agriculture and its failure.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable addition
Originally published in 1989 and out of print for several years, the Krieger Publishing Company's new reprint of zoologist Peter Pritchard's classic monograph, "The Alligator Snapping Turtle: Biology And Conservation", is an informed and informative introduction to one of nature's most impressive, dangerous, and famous of the turtle species. This new edition of "The Alligator Snapping Turtle" is enhanced with a major new section detailing the zoological progress made on the science and conservation of this species over the last seventeen years and is therefore a fully up-to-date, profusely illustrated treatise that includes the Snapping Turtle's geographic distribution, diet, reproduction cycle, natural history, exploitation and captivity, population status and trends, and so much more. With the addition of a comprehensive Index, a list of supplemental material, Reviews and Responses, Protection and Legislation, and more, "The Alligator Snapping Turtle" is an indispensable addition to professional and academic library Biology and Natural Science reference collections in general, and the supplemental reading list of turtle enthusiasts and wildlife conservationists in particular. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great starting source of info.
A good friend owns a cabing in the mountains, but not enough land and too close to the river for a septic leach field. Her holding tank was costing her dearly to empty.I bought this book, and helped her install a grey water leach field that has worked great and saved her TONS of money each year!!! While she used to pump her 1000 gal holding tank every couple months at a cost of $500-600, she now pumps about once a year! No more pumping shower and sink water with the sewage!!!!5-0 out of 5 stars If you live in the desert states, do this!
Excellent, real-world book on how to water a bunch of plants by recycling your own used water.I built this into my own home, and it works wonderfully well.We use only a few gallons of fresh water every month for watering, and we own an acre, much of which is planted in trees and shrubs! This trick works, and the book should be required reading for anyone living in the desert. It is literally all you need to set up a good, working grey water system for no more money than a typical wasteful system costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
Not only should you get this book: you should get your neighbors to get a copy too. Actually, I recommend that you also get the 2 companion books to "Create an Oasis": "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide".Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic reference
Super book that talks to all the needs of wildlife:Food, water, place to stay.It introduces the idea of creating wildlife habitat then steps through different types of gardens (woods, meadow, water) and then goes into some neat chapters on gardening for birds, butterflies and nightlife (which I esdpecially was interested in since I hadn't seen much of this). This was probably one ofthe first mainstream books to talk to bringing back habitat for wildlife and gardening for wildlife.I see it as a classic, a great foundation that you can build off of.If you're just starting to get your arms around gardening for wildlife this is a terrific place to begin - has more than enough to keep you busy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The National Wildlife Federation Guide to Gardening for Wild
Well If you are a avid gardener like me, you would be naturally attracted to the beautiful, coulourful pictures, perfect for coffee table adornment. The only disappoint ment is it does not help you if youlive in theCaribbean, it deals mostly with temperate plants, but otherwise a joy toread. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The voice of reason is finally heard!
As an engineer I've been trained to draw conclusions based on data. I've been frustrated by the junk science that dominates the discussion of environmental issues. This scholarly, yet readable, work puts to rest the many myths propogated by psuedo-scientists with a political agenda to promote. It presents leading experts in a wide variety of fields who explain the relevant facts in the context of solid theory. The reader will come away with a deeper understanding of the situation which is: there are real problems, but they can be solved without the burden of massive regulation of our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rational Readings
Rational Readings is a massive compilation of essays written by the worlds top scientists on today's most discussed topics. Void of doom and gloom predictions that we hear so much about through the scare tactics of themedia and political groups, Rational Readings gives us the truth abouttoday's environment concerns. In response to the review from Wisconsin, Ifind it humorous that this reader could possibly think that all of theseworld renowned scientists have come together to write a reference book tosupport their common political agenda. Perhaps the spreading of truthshould be a more common political movement. My compliments and many thanksto the contributing scientists and to the editor, Dr. Jay Lehr for puttingtogether this great reference book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Irrational readings for political reasons
As a scientist, I am embarrassed and outraged that this tome contains a myriad of errors and makes a number of outrageously hilarious statements: for example, the authors claim that acid rain is beneficial because itremoves "unwanted" organisms from lakes and streams, and thuscreates a "pristine environment" for swimmers and bathers. Ofcourse, this ignores the effects of acid rain on ecosystem functioning interms of multi-trophic interactions and ultimately, stability. Other topicsare handled in a similarly contemptible fashion. This book is a perfectexample of science distorted to support a political agenda. Certainly, itsone of the LEAST scientific books on the subject that I have read in along, long time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I Got It
I had this book pop up quite awhile on Amazon, probably based on prior crow searches I'd done, but it took me awhile to order it. Once I did, two things got me right away. The first was the author's dedication to her grandmother, and the memory of herbeloved canaries, for didn't my own granmother gently hold her canaries (each suceeding bird always named Dickie bird) in her hand as she trimmed their nails? Then, the first line of the introduction grabbed my attention: "I loved crows even before I knew I did." Me too! And though my love for them didn't take me as deeply into their lives as Barb went, their presence on the periphery of mine was certainly profound, as they lived around me in my busy suburban life, and quite confidently swaggered their way into my writing, ending up as pivotal characters in my fantasy series. It's just like them, they're there and they let you know it, one way or the other!
5-0 out of 5 stars A passionate observer of the crow shares knowledge
CAW OF THE WILD: OBSERVATIONS FROM THE SECRET WORLD OF CROWS arrived nearly simultaneously to CROWS and provides an intriguing contrast in style and approach. Barb Kirpluk is a passionate observer of crows and here shares her findings while tracking three urban crow families through their daily routines. She's befriended them, gained their trust, and thus provides a more personal observational style on crow habits and social relationships, including a healthy dose of scientific literature but adding a personal touch which brings the crow family to life.
5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant and fascinating personal study of crow behavior
With a beautiful and engaging style, the author tells of her personal experiences with 4 families of crows from her neighborhood. The details she gives are so thorough and heartwarming, you will come to know her crow friends as if you were actually there with her, experiencing what she did. You'll be drawn in and captivated as the human relationship with them evolves and strenghthens. You'll also learn much about crow behavior, and when you're not sure why the crows are behaving a certain way, the intuitive author offers her theories, which are quite plausible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spongebob would be proud...
I just spent 2 weeks with my Canadian nephews who are 8, 11, and 13 years old. Most of our evenings were spent in an endless Spongebob Marathon - Right after they left and went home, I came across this book and thought it would be a great companion reference for any Spongebob fans.Little did I know that Sponges are being overharvested and take many years to grow.Well, I'm sending my nephews a copy of this book so they can get a reality check on what's really going on in Bikini Bottom - and perhaps they could find their own everyday ways to participate in the healing of the ocean.-This is a Great Reference book for parents and kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars It Makes You Want to Go
Alex Hall has translated his knowledge of and love for Canada's Thelon River in this excellent book.It is not a "how to" book, as the adventures he takes are not of that sort.On their own very few people could cobble together the support and equipment, and then find a survivable route given the scant mapping available.Alex's years in the North have given him the skills and connections to pull off successful trips.Alex writes an account of how he puts it all together and travels the river with groups of visitors. His love for the Barrens, the Thelon, and the North shine through and make the reader appreciate his adventures. It also makes you want to go on one with him.

1-0 out of 5 stars A dishonest, misleading book
Other reviewers have noted Alston Chase's biases, though it took my wife the zoologist to point out just how dishonestly he supports them. He claims that nature is subject to drastic change without human intervention and that simple ecosystems are no more unstable than complex ones. He gives as examples (on page 108):2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
While the author does an admirable job of thoroughly outlining one particular version of the history of the ecological/conservancy movement and of the fallacious assumptions in the popular spiritually-overtoned meanings of "ecology" and "ecosystem" within the USA, obvious flaws in this book include the lack: of evidence for his own assertions, of positive elements in the history, of any alternative suggestions to the efforts he critiques, and of any acknowledged culpability for man due to man's science-enhanced unnatural fecundity and destructiveness or man's innate avarice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chase This One Away
I found this book to be fraught with factual errors, and was most notable for the omissions of inconvenient facts. This book is intended to give us the picture of a gentleman who is a moderate, and a voice of reason against eco-terror, but instead what I found was a thinly disguised argument in favor of clear cutting - but the author cannot even remain consistent with that argument, as most of his examples of sustainable systems are drawn from areas where selective cutting has been practiced. Many of the misrepresentations that are evident here are easy to spot if you are willing to research the vast array of literature available onthis subject, but the majority of his audience is not going to be able to take the sort of time to thoroughly research both sides of the question.Don't waste your time. ...
