5-0 out of 5 stars It's not human to be altruistic
This collection of essays explores how individuals view commonly-owned resources. The clear conclusion is that people are biologically selfish: each person sees his/her own interests as more important than the group'sinterests. Altruism doesn't work as a policy. This flies in the face ofcommon wisdom. I wish this book could be made standard reading for allhigh-school students. It explains the population's apparentlyself-defeating habit of destroying their own habitat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for a thesis
This is a highly informative book. It tells about people's different points of view on the highly volatile and up-and-coming field of ecopsychology. This book is a great source of information and knowledge of the field as well as it's a pretty easy read. I used this book as a jumping off point for research for my undergraduate thesis. If you are interested in environmental issues and psychology, read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Water on the High Plains
I spent my summers in the 1950's as a child on my grandmother's farm in western Kansas.I was always fascinated by the abundant water flowing out of the Caterpillar irrigation pump.It was frigidly cold on a west Kansas 100 degree day.My uncles would put a watermelon in a burlap bag and suspend it under the discharge water from the pump. The water could not have been much more than 60 degrees--or so it seemed. They used the old style irrigation method of that era: unlined ditches and irrigation tubes (first rubber, later aluminum). My older brother and I used to float down those ditches in inner tubes. So, I'm a little sentimental about the Ogallala.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the only African Wild Dog book
No, this is NOT the only book on the African Wild Dog, although yes it is a good one and well worth the money.I'd have to also recommend the one by McNutt, I believe it's called Dispelling the Myths of the African Wild Dog.McNutt has been studying these misunderstood dogs for many many years, and is one of the leading researchers. His book has lots of information about a particular pack he was studying, plus lots of info on the dogs in general, and has GREAT photos...some of the best AWD pictures I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book on wild dogs.
That's not just a compliment. It's a literal fact. There is no other book dedicated to wild dogs. Not in print. Probably not at all. And if we're to be "stuck" with just one publication, it is sheer pleasure to be stuck with this one. Highly readable, engaging, informative... robust science, excellent documentation, interesting and mind-expanding explanations and statistics... There's no other book out there, but even if there were, it would be hard pressed to meet this publication for quality and readability. Five stars. Worth every penny. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pumping too Much
Glennon writes in plain English to warn Americans of the growing danger under our feet.We are pumping groundwater, the gift of fresh and wholesome well water, at an unsustainable rate across the country.Glennon ties groundwater to surface water and illustrates in terms that are as accessible as they are urgent that the United States is headed for a crisis of our own making.
5-0 out of 5 stars The biggest pump wins!
If we say "Glennon covers all the ground" in a book about water, will the reader be confused?Let's take the risk, since that is precisely what the author does in this excellent study. From the ways in which water collects or flows on the land's surface to the movement of water deep in the earth, Glennon carefully explains how water accumulates. He describes farm, mining and even water for scenic tourist views.Water consumption has been an economic, social and legal issue since the colonies were founded almost four centuries ago.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book any hydrology student should read
I read this book during a summer program dealing with freshwater resources throughout the world. It not only helped my progression through the course, but also gave me a new perspective on water as a resource. In the US most of us do not give a second thought to the water we use in our everyday lives.Even in regions plagued by drought modern technology adds to the illusion that water is everywhere and limitless. However, any reader of this book will tell you differently. It takes you through different case studies through out the country where water use has had dramatic influence on the environment we live in.It explains not just the science of the situation but also the politics often behind the scenes as well.I would highly recommend this book to any student, professor, or hobbyist with an interest in hydrology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling
A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, themodels integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior.Fartoo many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between humanbehavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs orresource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model humanbehavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecologicalsystem. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if theychoose.

3-0 out of 5 stars Modeling the Environment
This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a reprint of 1997 edition
If you don't already have the original 1997 edition, then this is definitely a 5 star title. However, if you DO have the original, don't bother to buy this one. Despite the various developments mentioned in the preface to this 2005 edition -- advances in no-till planting techniques, restoration strategies for woodland wildflowers, methods for integrating native biodiversity into agriculture, and exploding Internet resources -- none are dealt with here. There is no updated information about weed problems and herbicides, despite the ongoing advance of invasives and development of new products. Lots has happened in the field in the decade since the prior edition was written, but you learn none of it here. This is just a reprint of the original -- and this is quite disappointing.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Tallgrass Restoration Handbook : For Prairies, Savannas,
Let me just say that it is nice that someone wrote more than just what plants to use. It is fairly easy to find prairie journals and books that describe everything except how to implement your prairie project. Packard had the good sense to know that seeding rates and implementation techniques are necessary information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing......
This is a top rate restoration hand book.Amazing amount of information from people who are out doing the work.It is a collection of essays/chapters written by the front-runners in the field.Everything you wanted to know from site selction to seed collection to fire management.Since it is written by actual prairie restorationists, not theorists it is practical and easy to understand.I will recomend it to everyone who is interested in the field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Anyone who has ever wondered about the environmental causes of cancer will be fascinated by this book. Steingraber is a gifted writer and a solid scientist (a rare but good combination) and she weaves scientific research and personal story together in a skillful way. The gist is that damning results from initial studies on the environmental causes of cancer need further study, but when all these initial studies are brought together like this it surely seems we are our own worst enemy when it comes to these terrible illnesses.
4-0 out of 5 stars Scary.
This is a powerful and moving account that dissects, piece by piece, the system which allows cancer-causing chemical agents to be released within the United States, primarily by corporations.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Important Legacy of "Silent Spring" Continues
Because of the immense importance of the subject matter- chemical contamination of our environment, this book was written for a general audience and Ms Steingraber's writing style flows with easy to understand, but alarming expose' of the hazards of chemicals in our environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody's Horses:A Phenomenal Story for Everyone!
Nobody's Horses is a beautifully written, heartwarming story by a cowboy veterinarian dedicated to his Oath. You will feel as though you are there in the midst of American history, danger, excitement and range of emotions experienced by Dr. Hoglund as he sets forth to rescue these magnificent horses. Nobody's Horses is a fascinating tale about passion for horses, the West and their interwoven past, present and future. A real page-turner that keeps you riveted with interest every step of the way. Indeed, Nobody's Horses is a phenomenal story for everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nobody's Horses
The horse has been a part of the very fabric of our American tradition. There are many who would raise the consciousness of the sorry fate of some of our equine friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kevin Maher, President, GlobalVetLink
Dr. Hoglund did a superb job capturing my attention from beginning to end of a fascinating wild horse capture. The personal sacrifice and dedication created a powerful visual of the great care and genuine concern he and others had for the wild horses and foals' safety. An added bonus was the historical references in the development of the west that illustrates the great importance of horses' dramatic influence in the development of our culture.
