5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent case for public ownership of water services
This excellent book makes the case for public ownership and control over our water services.
1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER AGAIN
This was, without question, one of the most depressing and boring books that I have ever read.I made the mistake of choosing this book for an analytical book report, and found it to be the most depressing choice I could have made.I wouldn't even reccommend this book to my worst enemy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addresses Threats to Our Most Valuable Global Resource
This was a great book that highlights the current threats to our global water supply. This book was particularly thorough in the analysis of the privatization of water resources. It explains the international institutions that prop up global water companies. I was very impressed with the extensive research that the authors must have put into this book - they used many examples of water issues from around the world. This book is a great introductory book for someone interested in becoming more knowledgable in water issues. It is also a great book for the general public to help them to understand more about a resource they probably take for granted. Don't buy bottled water! It is environmentally wasteful of resources and economically unjustifiable. It contributes funds to private companies and helps to support global water corporations! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the Importance of Environmental Activism
The scenario is chilling.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Analyis of the Environmental Policies of the Current Bush
Written to be a persuasive "reference" before the 2004 election, CAN is thought provoking, though at times a slanted view.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book every American should read
Robert Kennedy, Jr. reveals shocking activities going on in our country for which the general public has no knowledge. The damage the Bush administration is doing to our environment is unprecedented and unacceptable to anyone who cares about the future of the planet. A great read...a real page turner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Voice of the Earth Is Desperately Calling Us
This book could easily be seen as one of the most profound wake-up calls for humanity published for the 21st century! This is the stage in our evolution that we'll either continue on our destructive, insane, parasitic and unconscious collective death-wish to oblivion, or we'll heed the loud call heard here to become aware of our life-sustaining, interconnectedness to all life and start to heal our riff not only amongst ourselves, but more importantly, with Earth. To give this outstanding book a 5-star rating is not enough- it deserves 10-stars!
5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant exploration of contempory potential for eco-sanity
I re-read this book every few years, but it's only recently that I've come to appreciate Roszak's "exploration of ecopsychology" as a profound assessment of our "biospheric emergency" and a sure prescription for deep healing. In particular, his discussion of "plenitude" (evoking Mumford here), Roszak provides an elegant alternative to our current fascination with mindless surfeit.5-0 out of 5 stars A serious transcendental address of clashing ideologies
The Voice Of The Earth: An Exploration Of Ecopsychology by Theodore Roszak is a compelling and thoughtful exploration of the interconnection between psychology, ecology, science, and nature. Individual chapters address such issues as the true essence of mother earth/Gaia, Psychology vs. Cosmology vs. Ecology, and much more in this serious transcendental address of clashing ideologies of the planet we know best. The Voice Of The Earth is strongly recommended for readers with an interest in the philosophy of nature and the impact of human psychology upon the ecological environmental. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Michael Cohen's book RWN is full of historical fantasy.
When I first got this book, Reconnecting With Nature, RWN, I was quite intrigued. As a Sierra Club member I love the outdoors and support conservation efforts. However reading further one finds little ring of truth in RWN.Cohen is writing fantasy and trying to pass it as fact and history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
This book gives you little tasks after each chapter to really get you in touch with the nature that surrounds you. It opens up a new universe that we are all too busy to see in our own back yard or even a potted plant. Take time to connect with yourself and let nature take its course.

5-0 out of 5 stars "doing" something about it!!!
"Reconnecting With Nature" is a work of genius. It is the only ecological psychology treatise that I have found that proposes activities "to do" beyond ideas to think.Every chapter suggests specific exercises that intelligently inform the reader of how to take action so that the theory can be proven, or not, by the individual. Finally, a knowledgeable, knowing voice that goes beyond philosophizing by introducing the reader to a "yoga" that communicates non-verbally with nature. The bottom line is that "Reconnecting With Nature" empowers the individual to become the specialist/expert via experience, thereby, breaking the typical, habitual cycle of seeking ultimate authority in the academic and scientific communities.Great gratitude to Mike Cohen!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Every Homeowner Should Have
If you own property in urban, suburban or rural settings, you should have this book. It's the definitive guide to understanding wildlife, common diseases, and problems they may cause, and how to effectively solve them.5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guidline to living with wildlife
This is an excellent description of methods and techniques to use for the most commonly-considered "nuisance" species of wildlife.John Hadidian, the author, is both a wildlife enthusiast and a gardener, and hehas edited a very balanced set of explanations on how to discouragewildlife when it has become a problem for a homeowner. The solutions arehumane and can leave the homeowner proud that the situation was resolvedpeacefully. I ran a wildlife hotline with 50 volunteers frequently dealingwith the public on these very issues, and this book was the reference thevolunteers found most helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars An excellent example of alarmism, inappropriate interpretation and outright misrepresentation
With all the fuss being made over - An Inconvenient Truth - the movie and book by Albert Gore Jr., it is appropriate to review his 1992 book: Earth in the Balance. This review will cover two key aspects of this book: his so-called couple between carbon dioxide and temperature; and his extremism.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable undertaking by a blessed man
I approached this book with preset cynicism for two reasons. One, the author is a politician who was bitterly defeated by a much less qualified candidate. So, I expected a book filled with revenge and pity. It does have some, yet could be forgiven. Secondly, Al Gore's performance during his presidential recount was that of a drugged man out of touch with reality. Only after he accepted defeat, was when his spirit lit up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Earth in the Balance: Ecology & the Human Spirit by Al Gore
The book "Earth in the Balance Ecology and the Human Spirit" is by Al Gore, the former office-holding politician. A lot of fascinating research today examines ecology and environmentalism. The work often shows how concerns about the earth translate into government action. There are often frightening stories that predict an ecological armageddon, and the predictions are used to advocate anti libertarian laws.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Global Environmentalism
Guha's book is a short, but very well written book about the history of the Environmentalism movement. The Industrial Revolution, which began in England, soon brought writers and intellectuals to speak out against what they saw as the destruction of the world around them and the abuse of the natural resources of the land.
4-0 out of 5 stars Environtalism:a Global history
This book covers first wave and second wave of envoronmentalism. First wave is the initial response to the industrialisation. IT is expressed first by poets and writers such as wordsworth, ruskin, morris and carpenter. They gave message of simple life.Saint Gandhi gave the best known aphorism 'the world has enough for everybody's need but not enough for everybody's greed'. It is expressed secondly by ideology of scientific conservation. Here George Perkins,Marsh and Dietrich Brandis were forefront for scientific movement.Thirdly there is wilderness idea.It is the conservation of wild species and wild animals. John Muir is of the opinon that 'nature had a right to be cared for regardless of anybody's bank balance and any counrries gposs national product.Aldo Lopold was in favour of maintaining diverse flora and fauna. There are three other envoronmentalist as Patrick Geddes who gave a ohrase 'carboniferous capitalism' for the dependence of industrial cityon fossil fuels and tremendous pollution. Lewis Mumford, american historian wished that society would restore three disturbed equilibrium: equilibrium between city and village;the equilibrium in population by balancing birth and death rates;the equilibrium between humans and nature.Radhachand Mukherjee social scientist insisted that any social group must be considered in relation to the interwoven chain of biotic communities. Second wave of environmentalismwas started from 1962.After world war II America wasknown as 'affluent society' the period was known as 'development decade' but here ecological constraint to economical growth was regarded irrevelentso the period was known as 'ecological innocence'. After this phase, there is actual mass movement took place. It was stimulated by the book'Silent Spring' by Rachael Carson . It explained that there are intimate and essential relations between planta and plants;between plants and other plants;between plants and animals, that nature was in sum, an intricate web of life whose interwoven strands lead from microbes to man. In America there is wilderness movement known as 'Deep Ecology',then there is German green movement,Narmada bachao andolan and chipko'hug a tree' movement in India. In Thailand, there is ordination ceremony to protest forests. In Nigeria, movement fof survival of ogoni people and territories. In Kenya,Green belt movement. In Brazil,AGAPAN environmental initiative and chico mendes labour organiser promoted ecolgy and justice. Lastly it gives about international organisation such as world wildlife fund [WWF] in assisi and UNCED held at stokholm in 1972 and at Rio de janero in 1992. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read this book, must read it!!
Silberstein and Maser have written a must-read book for anyone interested in local community-planning with a definite sustainability twist. I read it for a paper on sustainable participation and found it to be quite easy to read; plenty of case examples and thought-provoking ideas make sure of that. I especially liked reading about the everyday problems that are so common in community-planning, it makes it easy to relate to. I rate it a four, since Im saving the five for a fantastic book yet to come... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Confessions of an Eco-Warrior
Before they were taken over by politically correct left coast weenies Foremans Earth First! was a very cool thing. They were "redneck hippies" who had a love for American wilderness and took radical steps to conserve it. Written after the FBI's attempt to set him up on bogus charges and after he left EF! Foreman lays out his ideas on conservation/ecology and his reflections on his life and times in the environmental movement. There is an emphasis on the wilderness in the western United States with Foreman but thats to be expected considering thats where he's from. Excellent auto-biography from an admirable man who has a lot of interesting ideas.
